You might not... but it's really nice when you can kill AND CLEAN the deer at the same time.... ;)

I hunt
I have a 22 for target practice to keep the shootings skills sharp cause its cheap to shoot.
I'd have more if I had more money IE shotgun and a handgun.
Those are optional cause they would just be closet queens or maybe I'd take up bird hunting but so far I haven't found it that appealing.

If you have to ask why you obviously have never shot a firearm. Get yourself to a range and find out the attraction. Hunting is something alltogether different again. Takes your skill developed at the range and puts it into practical application where wood craft is more important, where a lot of time you only get one shot.

I've never shot an MP5, but I saw someone do it(in full-auto, no less). He was having a blast. It's fun(for me) to shoot at targets. You shouldn't have to justify purchasing firearms with either hunting or self-defense.

What, you think an MP5 wouldnt work for self-defense? Not that I own an MP5, it just seems odd you say "besides hunting and self-defense", and then truncate it to hunting.

Guns like that are just fun to shoot. If you've never shot an automatic weapon then there's no way you'll ever understand.

Alot of people are saying that they own a gun for defense and security/protection....but I have to ask, is it really necessary to own a gun in order to protect yourself and your family? Most families are protecting themselves fine without guns....so what do you guys think about the families who believe they dont need a gun to protect themselves?

That's their right. However, they may change their idea of defense if someone actually breaks into their home wielding a firearm instead of a Louisville Slugger.

I call them potential victims.

Seriously, though, guns are equalizers, they turn a 90 lb female into the equal of a 250 lb robber, rapist, etc.

The sad thing is that the media has been shown to underreport crimes stopped by the use of guns, it's just a matter of time till the general public becomes complacent enough to ban guns in the US because of this kind of crap.

I think your opinion would change if you read a few of the stories in the NRA magazine. Every month, they have a section with ~5-10 stories about home/self defense.

Have you ever been robbed at gun point? Have you ever been raped? Have you ever been shot? I haven't... but I think I would feel extremely helpless.

Read a few of those stories and it will change your mind.

"It will never happen to me is just ignorant."

Here are some stories.

If you're protecting yourself from someone with a gun, yes. If you're protecting yourself from three people with knives, yes. If you're protecting yourself from someone who outweighs you by 150 lbs., yes.

I think the location of a person influences their opinion on guns.

It's better to have it, and never need it. Than to need it and not have it.

I am very aware that I could be robbed at gunpoint, or be a victim of another violent crime, but I will still not own a gun. I would do my best to defend myself without a gun.

I do not carry a gun, but I ALWAYS have my knife on me. I sure hope you have something to use to your advantage. After all, most criminals aren't old ladies... they are young men, who are more than likely, stronger and faster than you.

Noone needs a car that can do a 13 second quarter mile time. But it's fun to do it.
Almost noone needs mountain climbing gear, it's dangerous, expensive, and costs the taxpayers money every time someone does something stupid or makes a mistake. But that's an acceptable practice.
Who needs a parachute? Many people get out of planes alive without them.

You are well within your rights to make that decision for yourself, but would you tell (as mentioned earlier) a 90 lb. woman that she would have to make do with pepper spray against one or more 250 lb. attackers?

They might be stronger and faster than you, but I am very confident when it comes to me being able to defend myself and the ones I care about (without a gun.) And where are you going/what are you doing that requires you to carry a knife on you at all times?
