Consider your budget. I think 9mm is a good all-around caliber to start with.

At around $500, I'd look at a Glock 17 or S&W M&P 9.

At around $600-$700, I'd look at a Beretta M9A1 or 92, or Springfield XD or XDM 9.

At around $800, I'd look at a Sig P226 or a HK USP.

If you wanted to start practicing shooting, there are some nice .22LR guns out there. I like the S&W M&P 22 or the Rutger Mark III line. These will run more around $400 and ammo is very cheap.

You need a .22 for cheap practice. For concealed carry I think you need two, a standard or compact handgun, plus a pocketable one that can be concealed no matter what you wear, or as a backup. If you hunt you need a more powerful gun to take advantage of handgun hunting season. So you need four handguns.

To be honest, I got the Colt AR and the Sig P226. But because of the 1 handgun every 30 days rule in CA, I have to wait on the Model 41. But it is on order, so I consider it just a matter of time.

I also picked up a Mega Arms lower, a PSA lower premium kit, a couple of Howard Leight Impact Sports earmuffs, and about $1000 in ammo.

I've got more money than time. So if I were to spend a day shooting, I want a variety of guns to maximize my enjoyment. The upshot is that I don't mind stockpiling a variety of different weapons for that day.

In CA, you can only buy one handgun every 30 days. If that law and the complete BS CA gun registry did not exist, I'd be up to 40-50 handguns right now. That $450 M&P Shield cost me about $750 after doing the SSE (single shot exemption), fees and markup.

Depends on the state. Virginia for example only allows one handgun every 30 days.

But actually theres about half a dozen ways to get around those rules. A CCW for example lets you have as many as you want.

Not really true. Glock 29. Get the conversion kit for 22lr. There you have cheap practice ammo (22lr), its concealable, and can be used for hunting protection (and has been before). The pocketable comment is very debateable and its not a gun i will ever carry/own personally.

Meh the five-seven is just a novelty to me and not a gun id ever care to own. Ammo is expensive and hard to find most of the time. Its not very reloadable (imo).

Its kind of one of those guns that Im glad a friend has so i can shoot it from time to time but im glad i dont own it myself

You guys in Cali have to put up with so much BS, I can't imagine trying to build a decent collection there.

My M&P Shield was $399 brand new at a dealer, $10 for a background check that took 20 minutes to complete.

A day later I picked up an XD-s 45 for $450 with an extra extended magazine, also brand new. That transaction was private party so it took less than 10 minutes total including writing out a bill of sale.
