Whoohoo, AirDrop now works between iOS & OSX! I've actually really been wanting that feature!

Looks like they're taking on Dropbox with iCloud:

I love Apple, but their cloud stuff is about as good as their mice. MobileMe stunk and I've had a lot of issues with iCloud actually working as designed, so I'm not going to be one to jump in the boat right away. Pretty happy with Google Drive, as a matter of fact (and 15 gigs free!).

Hmm:

Switching to Mail, Apple's aiming to put things right with the inconsistent app that shipped with Mavericks. In Yosemite, expect to enjoy better syncing, fast message fetching and better file support. With this in mind, Apple's taken inspiration from Mac apps like Sparrow and Airmail and launched MailDrop, a new feature that addresses a "fundamental problem with email" by letting you send large files (up to 5GB) over email via iCloud. If you've sent a large file in the past, you might have encountered a bounce message, Apple's overcoming that by hosting the file on your behalf -- Mac users get the file without clicking, other clients can get to it through the link.

The plot thickens:

Drive allows you to work with a single version of a document on all of your devices (including Windows machines!).

Was just saying that on Twitter...they said a lot of their new customers are migrating from Android. I think I have yet to meet a single person IRL who did that...they always jump ship TO Android :p

I know of 3 friends that made the jump from iOS to Android. I only know of one friend that has gone from Android to iOS, one namely due to him not being a student and getting a good job with more spare cash available.

I wonder if iOS8 cripples my iphone5 :p

As long as the iPhone6 isn't rubbish I'll get it.

I'm on the fence. DSLRPros have a new smartphone 3-axis motorized stabilizer for doing automatic steadicam work, and Moondog Labs has an anamorphic lens adapter coming out this month for the 5/5S. So I'll have to see what the size & weight of the new phone is, and wait for the lens to get adapted for the new design.

iOS8:

1. Third parties can make plugins for other programs (ex. filters for photo editors)
2. You can swap in a third-party keyboard
3. TouchID is now available for third-party use
4. "Hey Siri" now starts her up
5. Shazam is now built-in
6. Support for third-party cloud storage providers (such as Dropbox)
7. iCloud for photos: 5GB free, 20GB for $1 a month, 200GB for $4 a month

There is a lot of good stuff this year. The thing about Apple I like is they typically integrate well within their systems so that it is hyped and actually used instead of just hyped and silently killed after 3-4 years of non-use. Apple tends to take their time with features but they usually work extremely well once implemented.

As a home automation enthusiast, I am EXTREMELY excited about their HomeKit HA integration suite. Long overdue!

Third party plugins for iOS apps is a huge deal. It should allow programs like Chrome and Safari to run browser extensions.

I still plan to jump to Android for my next phone though. Been eying that OnePlus One. I just think it would better fit my needs.

It didn't sound like the integration was that tight but I could be wrong.

Apple is finally started to majorly differentiate themselves from Google using their biggest asset Google doesn't have an equivalent to, OSX. Handoff, Airdrop, SMS, and phone call integration at the OS level between iOS and OSX makes owning a Mac and iPhone very interesting.

Did you notice how Apple subtly started to cut Google out with Spotlight search taking over some very common Google searches such as unit conversions, wikipedia, and such?

I'm really happy about the phone call/sms forwarding to another device. This is something that Palm did with the Pre and the TouchPad and it looked amazing, but I don't think they were ever able to get it widely rolled out before HP bought them. Been a long time coming.

was there going to be any hardware announced?

No hardware. With broad well pushed back its not surprising there isn't anything. All that usually comes in the fall after the betas are over.

I didn't catch the whole video so I'll watch it later. However, I do recall Google saying they were working on browser extensions for Chrome for iOS.
