In terms of real lifespan, I'm thinking the iPhone 5 is analogous to the iPad 2. Twice the RAM and twice the speed as the previous model to give it a lot of futureproofness.

Yeah, maybe - too bad the battery life is so poor, though. I have had an iPhone 3G, 4 and 5, and overall the 5 is my least favorite due to the battery life. Other than that it's great, but the battery life is startlingly poor.

Just be glad you don't have the 4S then. That one has the worst battery life. They went from a single core CPU in the 4 to a dual core CPU at the same clock in the 4S, but they did not change the battery.

That said, I would take the 4S over the 4 any day of the week, as it is just so much faster, and 5 over the 4S any day of the week too. The 5 has better reported battery life than the 4S too.

Hmmmmm. I had the 3G, 4 and now the 5 and it seems about the same as the previous ones, but considering I use it more it's not too bad. But yeah I'd love more battery life as well.

I really do think the 5 will start to show it's age in 2014. Amazed the 4 is still even considered viable and the 4S a lot better but still terrible.

I installed iOS8 on my test phone (5s) yesterday. There are a few bugs that I've run into such as the Settings app losing its back button so I have to restart the app and a few app from the app store start properly. Speed is very snappy, no different than iOS7 which is promising coming from the first beta.

The biggest changes I've found so far are with messaging. I tried the audio message feature and it works seamlessly. Images look better in messages as well. I haven't found how to message without going to the message app yet. Tapping the notification takes me to the app and not to a modal, I'll need to do some more digging on that. I'm not liking the predictive text input though. It seems too slow to use to fill in words and its predictive answers are too generic. I don't see it helping that much. In fact, the real estate it takes away from the keyboard/text screen is a bit too much.

I like the list of recent contacts at the top of the multi-tasking screen.

I'm going to install Yosemite on my MacBook later and am looking forward to the continuity between them. Handoff may be enough to get me to use Pages instead of Word for recreational use.

If you're in your phone and you get the banner for the notification, pull down on it to reply.

On the lock screen or in the notification center, swipe the alert to the left and hit reply.

That's how all OS's should perform. ESPECIALLY when you are offering cheaper devices (Android) where the average Joe will pick up just because "it's on sale." Now you have a potential for hordes of botnet drones on millions of unpatched phones. How fantastic.

It didn't help that her phone was stuck on an unpatched version of Android 2.3 because the model wasn't sold anymore and her carrier didn't give a damn about supporting it.

Any opinions on the new autocorrect in iOS 8?

I'm wondering, because after texting a bit tonight, I'm getting rather irritated with how autocorrect is treating certain words... mostly "its". Why does it always correct "its" (pronoun possessive) to "it's" ("it is" contraction)? I just used it about five times in a row as "its"! Worst off, I typed it, corrected iOS after it changed it, typed something afterward (e.g. "its color"), and it changed it back AGAIN (e.g. "it's color"). $%@#!!
