If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, remember
it was the first Marvel movie since 1944 and is regarded as one of the worst films of all time.

Keep in mind that Guardians is a property originally from the 1970's that has been universally panned until it was essentially rebooted in 2009 specifically for this movie.

Marvel today is not quite Marvel of yesterday. They are rebooting a LOT of characters and franchises, almost all have been for the better.

I am not sure if that is the reason they rebooted the series. It could easily have been because they are running out of stupid ideas and have been rebooting for awhile (Ultimate stuff, for example). It helped that they put Rocket Raccoon in Marvel Vs Capcom too.

One thing came to mind about the movie. I heard some people compare it to Star Wars, but I think I have to disagree with that. The biggest example of why this isn't Star Wars is at the beginning of the movie. (Not a spoiler, but I'll tag it anyway.)
After you see Peter barely escape Korath, you hear the news story about the peace treaty between the Xandarians and the Kree. They don't really touch on this much apart from mentioning it whenever Ronan is around or the Xandarians are talking about Ronan. Honestly, I don't think that's the "Star Wars approach"; Star Wars is touted as a space drama, and it would probably delve more into the nature of it rather than just treating it as pure exposition. Of course, I'm not talking about prequel-style, groan-worthy scenes of Jar-Jar Binks arguing in the senate.

There are also three scenes that stuck out to me that I would've liked to have seen changed slightly:

The first is
when Gamora and Nebula are arguing over who will retrieve the orb. Nebula attempts to put words in Ronan's mouth, and he won't have any of that crap! However, he pretty much just tells her to shut up. I want to see him be more authoritarian about it! After thinking about Star Wars above, the scene where Vader shows the general the power of the force is an example of that.

The second is
when Peter saves Gamora from a cold death in space, and he ends up on top of her (in a fairly suggestive position). I would've liked to see Gamora instinctively physically reject Peter... toss him off... punch him... or something. Of course, you could then add a bit of humor in there with something like, "You have an interesting way of thanking people!"
.

The third is
when Yondu crashes onto Xandar and he's surrounded by the Predator-wannabes (Sakaraans). The ensuing "fight" showed off Yondu's bad ass little needle, but honestly... the fight was boring. All the Sakaraans just stood there while Yondu whistled and killed 'em all. If I had to guess, they did this because it's a lot harder to film an actual fight sequence between fully-CG'd characters and real actors. As I mentioned earlier, I kept wondering what parts of the movie were CG. For example, during the box chat scene, I have a feeling that Groot was half-model, half-CG with the way Peter kept putting his hand on Groot's shoulder and the fact that until Groot stood up, only his head and arms would move.

Keep in mind that in the comics, Ronan isn't a villain but an anti-hero. He actually teams up with GotG in more recent storylines and Marvel may be headed in that direction.

This is going to be a little silly to say given that we're talking about comic books, but
Ronan kind of dies at the end of the movie from the power of friendship... summoning Captain Planet... the Carebear stare... whatever silly name you want to give it.
:p

DotPofA (which took me a few minutes to figure out) was pretty good as well. I don't know what Snowpiercer is though. =(

Going to see Hercules finally either tonight or tomorrow. And then, likely going to see Get on Up on Sunday.

Yeah, I will probably try to see DotPotA on Sunday. I have to see Boyhood tonight though and really want to see Snowpiercer tomorrow. Not really a fan of how the Hercules trailer looks, so will probably skip that.

I have no friends or family here, so I am essentially just going to wander the city and go to movies all long weekend.

I suspect that Vin Diesel was used for 3D modelling Groot (ie. he wore one of those suits with patterns/bobbles on) as well as the voice acting, but yeah, I was scratching my head when I noticed that the muscle'y guy wasn't Vin Diesel, it seemed a bit of a waste of money. I wonder if Vin Diesel is on the production team or is one of the producers, or perhaps he has some sway with them?

What next, they're using Judi Dench as the voice for the computer system? :p

If you read my post above, they decided to use him as Groot after he already signed a contract to play a major Marvel character in a to be announced 2016 film. They already had him in their stable when they asked him if he'd like to do the voice of Groot as well. Since he wasn't attached to the project until way late in the development, I don't think he did mo-cap, but they did record him while he was doing the voiceovers. They had him(and Cooper) move around and act while doing the voice over work.

I don't understand how the estimates for this movie were coming in at 60-65m. This was going to be a 80m weekend easy. I'm holding out for 100m.

It made $11.2 million for its 7:00 10:00 and 12:00 am showings yesterday. Also made $11million in its first day on the international market.

The studio was the one giving a pre-release estimate of $60-65million. The industry, based on Thursdays numbers thinks it could hit $90million+ domestically, and well over $100million domestic+international. The studio went conservative, because the movies biggest stars were doing voice work and it was unproven ip. They obviously thought it would do extremely well, even with the conservative estimate, as they greenlit the sequel before release.

Disney Marvel is definately a winner this year. They have successfully bookend a terrible lackluster summer movie season with two high grossing films.

And the cameo was known as long as the credits list has been available(a while), no one knew how that cameo was going to be handled though. Many speculated it was probably just going to be playing on the tv screen at the beginning of the film as the film started out in the late 1980s. I feel the cameo was appropriately used. Not sure you can read anything else into it.

I'll say it again, I want a Luke Cage movie. And set it in the 70s. At the end of the movie (do we always have to have end of the movie shorts?) you can then bring him forward to the 21st century through a mcguffin. (My choice: have a building fall on him, pretty much entombing him and knocking him out for 40 years. And the person to find him? Danny Rand, of course, who is building his new office tower in that space. Allude that Danny is in the act of becoming Iron Fist as a super hero - he's already come back from K'un-L'un)

They are making a series on Netflix that will star Daredevil (not Ben Affleck), Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Terry Crews looks to be in the running as Power Man, and he is perfect.

They've already announced a Luke Cage movie as well I believe.

Aren't they making five different series?

Okay, based upon this article, it looks like it's four series and a mini-series (for the combined group from the aforementioned four series).

Thor 1 or Thor 2?

I seem to recall seeing the gauntlet briefly, somewhere-I thought it was Thor 2, though...but that really makes no sense. Even just one Infinity gem is ridiculously powerful. Having that Gauntlet in any kind of storage, display, "safe keeping" is just bad bad bad, and it looks like all of the gems are in place there? which is also very strange...unless they aren't making the gauntlet as powerful as it was in the comics.

This is the thing that can supplant Eternity's position in the Cosmos. It isn't going to be sitting anywhere like that, because if those gems are together, someone will be wielding that weapon.

Was Thor 1, I think. And, yeah, if I was Odin, I'd be thinking the safest place for it is on my hand, not in some vault.

Would be worth it for this scene alone.

Rise of the Guardians” is simply magical. It takes a very different view of the legends that we have all grown up with, bringing back nostalgia for adults and magic for kids. It attempts to truly make you believe in the childhood fables with its hair-raising battles, lovable characters, and spectacular wonders of lands beyond us.

The myths of the holidays come together with the four immortal Guardians—the jolly yet tough Santa Claus, the warrior-like Easter Bunny, the entrancing Tooth Fairy, and the silent but adorable Sandman. It is their job to protect and bring joy to children all around the world. When evil Pitch (the Boogeyman) threatens to overtake the world with fear, teenager legend Jack Frost is appointed as a new Guardian. The Guardians must learn to work together as a team and get children to believe in them before it is too late. Jack embarks on his own personal journey, as well, finding his purpose in being a Guardian. It’s the “Rise of the Avengers” from our childhoods, and in a good way, too.

“Rise of the Guardians” is visually stunning, especially in 3D. The sight of legends at work will make everyone believers once more. There are a lot of laughs and more heart than I expected. The poignant moments are expressive, especially when Jack bonds with the only boy, Jamie, who still believes in the Guardians. This is a movie for the entire family to enjoy without any innuendos, because the mere idea of legends uniting and epic battles in the night sky will make your jaw drop, cracking even the hardest of critics with its playful nostalgia. It also puts a fun twist on the characters, as well, bringing each one to life with a very distinct personality.

The film portrays Jack as a fun-loving, mischievous teenage rascal who first rejects his new title as a Guardian, frustrated by centuries of disbelief in him. For three hundred years, he feels unwanted because no children believe in him—and therefore can’t see him. He declines the responsibility that comes with being a Guardian because he doesn’t understand why he’s chosen. When he asks, “Why me?” Santa tells him, “You have something very special inside, and we can’t do it without you.” Jack discovers that he has the makings of a true hero—selfless, courageous, and, surprisingly, kindness.

The movie has two heartwarming messages. The first is about how everyone has a different role to play and a special “center”. Santa’s center is to bring wonder to the children, and Jack Frost must find his own center. God has also put “centers” into our own heart, things that we are passionate about and love to do. Just like Jack faces questions about his past and purpose, we also must deal with questions like “Who am I? Why am I here?” We can only find our purpose and destiny in God, who is the Creator of all. The Bible says in Colossians 1:16,

“For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.”

Another message is about hope versus fear. Sandman and Pitch (the Boogeyman) are the exact opposites of each other—one brings sweet dreams, while the other overtakes the minds of children with nightmares. Pitch declares, “It’s time for fear to rule the world.” In the end, even though the children acknowledge Pitch’s existence, they declare that they are not afraid of him because they have the Guardians by their side. As Christians, we should not be afraid, because we have God on our side. Psalm 118:6 says,

“The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

Objectionable Content

There is mild name-calling between the Guardians, such as words like “bloody” and “coward”. Families can also talk about the worldly portrayal of Christian holidays. Christmas is supposed to be when we celebrate the birth of Christ, while Easter is when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, but the secular view turns it into a mishmash of Santa, Christmas trees, the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs. Also, the Guardians look up to the mythical deity-like “Man on the Moon” for direction and guidance, instead of God. Another warning to parents is that younger children may be frightened by the idea that Pitch spreads fear through dreams and some battle scenes may be too intense for them.

I would recommend this movie to any family looking for a whimsical, slightly quirky, magical movie. The voice-overs are commendable and the movie’s feel-good, keep believin’ tenors will draw the entire family into a world of hope, joy, and child-like innocence. All in all, this movie was a joy to watch. The uplifting morals will find their way to not only your heart, but to your dreams as well.
