"Guardians of the Galaxy" - currently 100% on RT

Budget for this movie was $170 million. Forecast 1st weekend take is $82 million domestic, but anything north of $65 million would be a win.

That's pretty good since until now, James Gunn's total lifetime worldwide box office take combined for his 2 previous movies is $13 million.

Vin Diesel is slated for more than one Marvel role. He is slated to play a different character in the third act/arc(the movies following Avengers 2). It looks like he will be reprising Groot in the third act as well as GoG2 was given the go ahead before GoG was even released.

He came about playing Groot because he signed the deal to appear in a at least one movie possibly more in the third act/arc. When that was announced there was a ton of public response and the publicity from that ended up landing him the role of Groot. The head honchos(Kevin Fiege) of Marvel personally recruited him to play Groot because Diesels best acting role in his entire career was Iron Giant and they thought that experience made him an ideal candidate. Not to mention that wen through multiple voice actors for Groot before choosing him.

Speculation is that he will be playing a major role in the yet to be announced The Inhumans. With the Inhumans being the bridge movie between the traditional Marvel Universe and the GoG Universe. thus setting up The Avengers 3. But speculation was he was also Thanos before it was announced Josh Brolin was announced as Thanos. But one thing for sure is he is confirmed for two separate roles in the Marvel Universe.

And why are Cooper and Diesel in GoG? Well for one thing the money, but from what I understand the two of them are huge comic book and gaming nerds.

Guardians of the Galaxy will fair extremely well overseas as well. This was Marvels biggest risk to date and it looks like it will pay off. Their next big risk is AntMan.

I just did a search, and according to Wikipedia, Gunn finished filming in October 2013... and post-production finished... the beginning of this month! 😱 This was mostly on my mind, because over the weekend, I heard that Duncan Jones had already finished filming for the WarCraft movie back in May (Wikipedia)... and that the movie doesn't come out until 2016.

As the credits scrolled, it was hard to miss the huge wall of text that was the name of all of the animators on the film. They literally filled the entire screen with names only separated by a single dot ( like this: ● ) for probably about 10-15 seconds. Damn. Damn damn!

Thor 1 or Thor 2?

I seem to recall seeing the gauntlet briefly, somewhere-I thought it was Thor 2, though...but that really makes no sense. Even just one Infinity gem is ridiculously powerful. Having that Gauntlet in any kind of storage, display, "safe keeping" is just bad bad bad, and it looks like all of the gems are in place there? which is also very strange...unless they aren't making the gauntlet as powerful as it was in the comics.

This is the thing that can supplant Eternity's position in the Cosmos. It isn't going to be sitting anywhere like that, because if those gems are together, someone will be wielding that weapon.
 
Just got back from the 9 o'clock showing and the movie was awesome! Much more comical than I expected and more comedy than the other marvel films. All very well done though imo so it doesn't seem goofy or out of place. Highly recommend seeing the movie. If it matters at all I knew nothing of the gotg series before this movie.
 
My friends keep pushing back which day to watch GotG and it's KILLING ME. I almost went to see it tonight and just see it again with them next week. 😛
 
I enjoyed the movie a lot. It seems "fresher" than the other Marvel movies but I guess that's mostly because it's all in space/alien worlds. I'm not sure where I would rank it, but it's at least above the latest round of Marvel movies since Avengers.

I have a hard time comparing it with The Winter Soldier. Captain America 2 gets bonus points for truly being fresh in the style of movie as my largest takeaway was, "That didn't feel like a comic book movie." That's not a bad thing either. Guardians of the Galaxy did feel a bit more like a comic book movie, but the fact that it doesn't include any other hero references or even locations lets it stand on its own.

My biggest compliant about the movie is that it felt like there were a few points in the movie where the pacing fell a bit flat. Also, I would've liked to see more of
Drax vs. Ronan.
I thought that Ronan was decent overall. They probably could've done a bit more to make him seem a bit more detestable.

Although, I disagree with some critics about one thing... Bautista as Drax. I think he did a good job where some reviewers say he can't act. While I doubt he's a great actor, I understood the personality that he was trying to portray, and I think he got it right most of the time.
 
Reviewers who don't like the movie calling it "nothing to marvel at", how cheesy. I mean their phrase not the movie, just to be clear.

Vin diesel is definitely an admitted nerd. That's why he keeps going back to Riddick, he loves Sci-Fi

I suspect that Vin Diesel was used for 3D modelling Groot (ie. he wore one of those suits with patterns/bobbles on) as well as the voice acting, but yeah, I was scratching my head when I noticed that the muscle'y guy wasn't Vin Diesel, it seemed a bit of a waste of money. I wonder if Vin Diesel is on the production team or is one of the producers, or perhaps he has some sway with them?

What next, they're using Judi Dench as the voice for the computer system? 😛

I feel the same way about a lot of things you mentioned.

For me, Captain America 2 is a stand alone film from the rest of the Marvel films. It was very interesting and very unique.

I can't remember exactly where it was, but the movie did feel like it died. But it was right before the climax so I forgave it. Mainly because I thought it was basically full throttle until then. I think I might have needed the break before the end.

And I also thought Boootista was pretty good as well. I don't have any complaints. Bradley Cooper nailed his performance. Vin Diesel also played it great. Even Zoe Saldana, whom I don't normally like, was very excellent. Casting for this movie, IMO, was essentially near perfect.

I think I might go see it again today.
 
You want to talk about filming being done for a long time before release, look at the new mad max movie.

Thor 1, and yeah why wouldn't the frost giants go for that instead?

Also, I'm betting the gauntlet is toned down in power like the gems. Sure it'll be super powerful, but not the whole god set of powers like the gems have in the comic.

Keep in mind that in the comics, Ronan isn't a villain but an anti-hero. He actually teams up with GotG in more recent storylines and Marvel may be headed in that direction.
 
I saw this movie last night and i loved it, very funny and entertaining. I am surprised they added the sexual humor and swear words that definitely are not in the other marvel movies. I am not against it but i think it will take somes parents by surprise after the fairly PG rated marvel movies prior.
 
Saw this last night. It was great. I loved the music, loved how it wasn't taking itself serious, and loved Pratt as Quill. He was made for that role. Bautista was also really good as Drax.

The post credits was silly, but just another refreshing "we aren't taking this so serious" moment. Thankfully, Gunn doesn't subscribe to the "Batman is srs bsness and can't tell a joke!"

I am confused as to if the Collector was working for Thanos or not. In Thor 2, it seemed like he was. However, in this one, he seemed like an independent entity. I really want a Thanos movie. But, then again, I really want a Victor Strange vs Dormammu movie as well. Throw in a Shuma Gorath and we got ourselves a real movie! I am also saddened by the lack of Tom Fiddlesticks / Loki because he is awesome!

Yes, it threw me for a loop as well. Clearly, Loki and The Collector are working together, but not for Thanos? Unless Thanos is just using any means at his disposal to get the Ininity Gems. I also thought The Collector would play a much larger role in this film so was kind of saddened by his amount of screen time.

I believe both Loki and Ronan were Thanos' pawn in his quest for the infinity gems. I just believed the Collector was gathering them on his behalf as well. I am also disappointed with the lack of screen time. I figured with del Toro credited this time, he would show up more or have a larger role.


Also, when Ronan rebelled, I really wanted Thanos to show up and crush him! "Oh, you are trying to use the infinity gem against me? Ha! I am far too powerful for some Kree filth to oppose me." Other than Thanos being super passive, he looked really cool!

And, I am extremely annoyed Richard Rider or even Sam Alexander didn't make a cameo of some sort or hint at Nova Corps creating Nova.
