They are both 19x12 -> 62 - 69 - 113...

In most cases (99%) without benches you wouldn't be able to tell them apart...

In AvP, Metro 2033, both Call of Duty games, and Far Cry 2 there is both a significant and noticeable speed increase that would be noticeable while playing. Especially when considering minimum frame rates are what drive down the experience while playing and averages while benchmarking.

Dirt 2 is questionable, but once again if fermi's minimums are significantly higher than the hd5870's, then it would be noticeable in that game too.

All in all, much more noticeable than you saying unperceived 99% of the time.

I think you're being a bit optimistic. 5-10% on a single driver release is highly unlikely unless it's fixing major bugs, which I don't think is the case (when driver patch notes say 'up to 30% more performance in Far Cry 2 with AA!' it's not really accurate)

Except that people have tested the 10.3 drivers and they have given big gains on many of the games in Nvidia's PR document. Some people have seen gains exceeding what AMD is claiming, in contrast to most driver releases where you hardly ever see the gain get up to what is claimed. Most importantly with 10.3 is that a lot of DX11 games got a good boost, esp. Dirt 2.... and Hawx is 30% faster which means that instead of losing that title to Fermi it will be at least as fast.

Since when is something that's posted by Fudzilla considered "official"???

I consider fud fairly trustworthy with negative NV news since they tend to be optimistic.
Similarly I consider SA to be fairly trustworthy with positive NV news since he tends to be pessimistic. Sure it's not perfect, but they usually don't reverse position without cause.

I'm surprised no websites have broken NDA yet. ALSO ----- has any recent driver updates from nvidia say "added support for gtx470 & gxt480"? There was a WHQL driver release today, but no mention of fermi in it.

Until CCC stops responding. :D

Those happens like once every two months, when you close the CCC after a change like anti aliasing settings or anything, good riddance!! It could be worse, the gray screen of death, more G92 rebranding or the nvlddmkm crap stopped responding crashing your PC!!

Charlie: "In the end, the card is too hot, too slow, and unmanufacturable. We told you so. Pop goes the ego."
--

I think his ego is the one in need of popping... This guy is trying FAR too hard to convince us that he's been right all along, and glossing over little issues like the fact that there will be more manufactured parts at launch than there were 58X0s.

Fermi availability pushed back to April 12th

http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/18208/1/

First it was pushed back to the 6th of April... now the 12th...

That suggests that there will be very few Fermi boards at launch (26th March), with availability to follow several weeks later.

How is a videocard being released at a lower price point under a different name worse than a driver crashing?

Not that all that often I agree with OCGuy, but I do here. 87C is nothing for a high end GPU.

Though it may not be too hot, it is hotter and hungrier for power. More heat = more wasted power. When you have a chip that wastes power that means it's spending less of the energy you throw at it rendering polygons and more of it heating your room.

I for one like a graphics card that doesn't require a turbine to keep it cool.

GTX480 over 5870
19x12 4AA/16AF - 21% faster than 5870
25x16 4AA/16AF - 22% faster than 5870

GTX470 is the real stand out since its $50 less than 5870 and more or less delivers similar performance. ATI may need to knock off $20 off 5870.

It's time to send 5850 to her designated $260 MSRP :)

Yep performace is in the ballpark i was expecting - 15~20% usually

I think ATI will just drop the 5870 to GTX470 prices, and 5850 back to $259

Maybe we will get another pricing war, sounds good to me!

I just hope official benches also show 20%+. It's about time. I mean 5870 was released in September of 2009 and it's almost April 2010. It's interesting that NV fanboys will likely say "the 6 months wait was worth it". Maybe it's time to start singing, wait 6 more months for HD6000 series tune

Just playing.

My CCC comment was directed to (sarchasm) the comparison between the two cards would be unknown if not benchmarked.

Until CCC stops responding - then you know you're running ATi. ;)

Actually that seems to have gotten better but I'm not entirely convinced I want to keep this plank number 5970 in my box. ;)

If you happen to sail past the UK and want to offload any surplus lumber at a cut down price... exchange rate and all...

Wood floats. I wonder how long it would take the Gulf Stream to get it across the pond!

Messages in bottles are neat. Imagine a new concept! CPU in a tube. ;)

GTX 480 - 94C in Crysis according to AT:

http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3783&p=19

- "Finally, with this data in hand we went to NVIDIA to ask about the longevity of their cards at these temperatures, as seeing the GTX 480 hitting 94C sustained in a game left us worried. In response NVIDIA told us that they have done significant testing of the cards at high temperatures to validate their longevity, and their models predict a lifetime of years even at temperatures approaching 105C (the throttle point for GF100)."

So, at full load it's only mere 11C away from throttling and Nvidia expects it to last for years? Riiiiiiiight.
