GTX275

Gotta love how Nvidia itself contradicts your bias

The fact they are releasing this card means the 4890 will undoubtly beat the GTX260 in about every setting out there, which is no surprise to every other AT forum member anyway

This is something that I don't understand. 4870 1gb already competes against the 260, so why would ATi make another card that is just as fast? I'm seeing this 4980 more of a GTX 285 competitor, otherwise it doesn't really fit anywhere.

Awesome!

Although I will say just like I said in the 4890 thread.....meh. Bring on the next gen.

For a guy with GTX280 in SLI, there really isn't anything that can impress you in the gpu market right now.

But for the crisis affected individuals  , these card are golden, dropping the prices further for other cards and so on.

How is this "one step ahead of the competition"? Wouldn't this launch much earlier if they were?

"Nvidia has briefed their partners only very recently and details have been pretty vague so far"

Seems this is reactionary.

Because in Wreakage's lala land world, Nvidia is the own0rz

And BTW: the 4870 was also rumored to only compete with the 9800gtx, and we all know how THAT turned out

This we'll never find out if it's true. It's what ATi told us. Maybe they aimed higher, but ended up shorter. Who knows...

Based on the information we received during our conversations it seems like the Ati Radeon HD 4890 (Single) will compete against the Geforce GTX 260 and not the GTX 285
Huh, now lets look at a recent review (dated March 10th)

http://ixbtlabs.com/articles3/video/rv770-6-p1.html

The overhauled GeForce GTX 260 outperforms its rivals noticeably (given the prices are similar).

The 4890 is ATI's answer to the core 216. The GTX275 will simply keep the 4890 in 3rd place (behind the 280/285).

Rumors can be deceptive, eh?

I don't know Wreckage. Anandtech's recent review on the GTX 250 shows the 4870 512MB generally outperforming the GTX 260 216sp. Not sure why ATI would release a card to perform at the same level.

Well, remember when AMD announced the 4850 they said it was to compete wtih the 8800GT and look what it really did. I wouldn't be suprised if the 4890 fell between the GTX280 and GTX285 in performance. Of course we have no idea what it's specs will be.

This sounds like another reactionary part from Nvida, hardly 'a step ahead'. It sounds like they are taking one of the GPU's from the GTX295 and placing it against the 4890. Maybe Nvidia knows how fast the 4890 will be, or had heard some rumors.

I'm looking forward to 40nm parts, but I don't mind a little more innovation before we get there. 🙂

Yep, Anandtech had 4870 512 right near gtx 260 c216. But maybe the ixbtlabs.com has more credibility then anandtech. After all its name comes from xbitlabs and it's very original. 🙂

There's no use in using logic. He won't agree no matter what you show him. But the truth is the 48701GB and GTX260 216 are pretty equal and compete very well. Some times the GTX260 is faster. Some times the 4870 is faster. Once in a while the 4870 is faster than the GTX280 and even the GTX285. They are very close to one another over all, the GTX260 216 and 4870 1GB. The 4890 should be a solid step ahead of the GTX260. Depending on the 4890 specs the GTX275 or GTX280 will probably compete with it, but we don't know yet. I imagine Nvidia has a good number of those GTX295 'hybrid' GPU's they could use by themselves. Without two of them they could put a decent cooler on it and crank the clock speed some.

I am looking forward to some new choices from both companies though. 🙂

The 4890 is for competing against the GTX 260 Core 216 from a price perspective, not performance. AMD already beats Nvidia at every single performance point, and they do it with cheaper cards. This will just be a much faster card for the same price, rather than just a little faster for cheaper as they have now with the 4870 vs GTX 260 Core 216.

I was just wondering if a GTX265 was in order after all the recent news of the 4890. Looks like they one-upped me and chose GTX275 hehe. I hope the new cards pan out, and when they are out I can't think of a better for an incremental upgrade.

Honestly anything from a 260-275 or 4870 512-4890 will be so close in performace to anyone with a 24" monitor or smaller, I dont understand why they put so much $$$ into releasing all of these different cards.

It gives us something to talk about here though, so I guess that is a good thing.

The amazing thing is that it took ATI this long to come up with a response to the core 216 and NVIDIA already has a step up on the way.

With so many review sites giving the nod to the 260-216 ATI had to do something even if is just a relabel to the 4870, but now they won't get the chance if the 275 comes out in the same time frame.

This actually matches up with the rumors of a 260 price drop, making room for this new card.

That is so true.

I guess that both companies are trying to avoid the release of a major performance next generation card, in these times, when people are shorter in their pockets and probably the sales will not be so extraordinary. So they take the fight in another place, where there are still more money to be made.

Yes and lets say that Nvidia will win and it will have the strongest cards on the market. And you care for that because? This is just what I don't get from you. Nvidia will be the best. Hip hip hurray. And?

Actually that would just be status quo.

ATI's HD4890 has been in the works for quite some time, and nothing is final about it. There's been rumours flying around left and right. Maybe Nvidia just wants some attention as well. The GTX275 most definately is a reaction to the HD4890. But I don't think the GTX275 makes much sense. I mean, we all know how close a GTX260 black edition can get to a GTX280, and even perform on par. A GTX275 will tread really close to a GTX280/GTX285. Also, there will be no room for a GTX260, since if only the clockspeeds of the GTX275 get jacked up compared to the GTX260, factory oc-ed gtx260 = equal to GTX275. It's very hard to imagine a GTX275 gets 240 sp's, so that leaves either a 512-bit memorybus, or maybe, but less likely, 240sp's with a 448-bit memorybus.

All in all, I don't see this happening. There just isn't much room for improving a GTX260, with the GTX285 allready out there. If it does happen though, and the GTX260 really lowers in price, and it beats the HD4890, AMD will most likely react again with another price cut. It's win win for the consumer, no matter what happens. CJ actually thinks the GTX260 will get phased out, so Nvidia has a 275/285/295 line-up. Oh, and last but not least, if Nvidia was to release this card within a month *6th of april* it must have the gpu's allready. Perhaps that makes a 448-bit 240sp-gpu more likely?
