Nope, don't see the point of switching from my 7970 to gain a few frames.

Same here, plus I'd have to get rid of some Skyrim mods to be able to fit under the 2GB limit. The 680 looks to be a great card though. Didn't really expect it to perform so well in so many areas.

Maybe. I need something different, my XFX 5870 was OK at 1920x1200 but is weak at 2560x1600 since I upgraded to a U3011. I was hoping for a little more from Nvidia.

You know what is funny? I can actually buy 7970 for 10% less than GTX680 in my country and at that price it is a better buy. This is probably true for more countries.

nVidia could give him AIDS and he'd tell you the sex was good.

He would then claim that he was a gift seeker and claim that he always was that way and nv did him a favor.

No, my gtx 480 is still kicking butt and taking names for me. Plus, price/performance sucks this round. I think I'll wait for big K/8 series or possibly even Maxwell/9 series before upgrading again. Well, unless I cave in and buy a newer/larger/better monitor.

Decided i couldn't stand a 5830 anymore, bought a 7950. Perfectly happy with it. I play everything with vsync, so if the card makes it to 60 FPS, i'm excited. But those FPS bumps from the 680 are nothing to shake a stick at.

Yep, just ordered one. It's replacing my 4870. Seemed like it was to upgrade, though I am considering cancelling and waiting for whatever they have in August. That should coincide with the Planetside 2 release (or at least beta).

$500-$550 is out of my price range but definitely happy that the 680 dominates the 7970

want prices to start getting pushed down

Yes for sure. Anyone want a 7970 for $450? Can meet in Orange County.
Ha, if I had the money, I would drive up from San Diego.

Anyway, I have no interest in the 680 due to my cap being $300. I've been enticed to up that limit, but my monitor is 27'' 60Hz 1080p. So I don't think I really need anything beyond a 7870 (or equivalent). I do want the lower power/noise/heat of the new architectures. But the prices have been a little too high IMO. Was excited to see the 680 reviews b/c I think it means GCN line will be reduced, pushing the 7870 into my price range.

But I've already gotten tired of BF3 anyway... though Metro and Stalker COP are in my steam backlog.

When considering inflation, top end GPUs are much cheaper than they used to be. I remember a whole bunch of $650 cards, and one $800 8800 Ultra which was a total rip off.

Nope, for numerous reasons:

1) Only buy AMD
2) Despite 1, I wouldn't buy the 680 because it's way over my Budget limit of $250-300 max
3) My current setup runs everything I throw at it just fine

Going back a year:
- gtx 460 1gb sli
- asus 580 dcu ii
- lightnings 580 sli
- 7970

Grabbed evga 680 in the morning: I always need to have latest and greatest, and I knew from the beginning that 7970 would be just 28nm stopgap to toy with until kepler arrives. My shortest term before the upgrade: jan 9 - march 22.

Now I can finally recharge and put to use my 3d vision glasses again.

I'm a little put off by this being a midrange design but bearing the high end cost. Would rather see the true successor to the GTX580 even if $100 more.

Waiting on the overclocking information, hopefully it gets sorted out. ATM it seems like it's still a bit too weak both in performance and in OC potential.

I might actually sell my entire rig and rebuild in the fall around GK100 and Ivy Bridge tbh.

I am waiting for GTX 685 or whatever GK110 will be called.

Same, but in my case I am waiting for $600+ GTX685 to drop because hopefully HD7970 and GTX680 will drop in price to $350-399 by the time the next monster cards launch (Q4 2012/Q1 2013). Refreshes tend to bring 15-20% higher performance but result in the 2nd fastest cards line of cards to plummet in price (HD5870 right before HD6970, GTX480 before GTX580, etc.). If the rumors of 40-50% faster GTX685 are true, then current cards would drop a lot more unless GTX685 is $800 like 8800 Ultra. Realistically I don't see that happening for a while though.

I tend to stay 1-2 generations behind and aim at $200-250 upper mid-range cards. Also, in the summer time I prefer to play some outdoor sports, travel a bit; so I feel less excited to upgrade. However, looking at new cards gives me an idea of what my next card will likely be. I am hoping AMD responds to GTX685 with a new high-end 2304 @ 1200mhz card by Q4 2012/Q1 2013 so that HD7970/GTX680 will become "old news" and can be bought on on a nice sale for $300. Looking at 28nm ramp up though, it might just be 15-18+ months wait before current high-end cards are $300 or below.

I am in the mood for an upgrade, but I'm getting rather apathetic with GPU's lately. I remember when the 8800GTX came out and was twice as fast as the 7900GTX in many situations; I wouldn't mind seeing that kind of leap again (not that I expect it). These 15 and 20% improvements aren't doing it for me.

In my mind 8800GTX is the most legendary GPU ever made (yes even more impressive than 9700Pro). Not only did it take AMD 2 full generations to beat that card (HD2900--> HD3800 ---> HH4800), but 8800GTX could actually play games 3-4 years from release. That can't be said for 9700Pro. So I think it'll be a long time before we see the level of dominance displayed by 8800GTX. Not only was it an extremely impressive NV GPU, but it also happened when ATI/AMD released one of the worst GPUs in its history. For this to happen again, both of these things would need to occur simultaneously. GCN architecture is actually very good. So HD8000 should be competitive. I really don't see another NV GPU beating 2 generations of AMD cards.

This! I was ready to buy the 680, but hearing this kind of bothers me. Still, performance is good but I'm saving my coinage for a full rebuild which will happen soon. Gotta pick a video card for it and 680 might be it. I play Battlefield 3 and the performance of the 680 is very impressive in that. Honestly though, aside from Battlefield 3 I'm actually wondering if I should bother buying a new card. Gotta see how it goes I guess. Might wait, depends on how much I am allowed to spend lol.

I ordered an ASUS 7950 DCII which offered a DEFECTIVE cooler for ALL their DCII 7950 cards, at $489.

As you can imagine, I quickly RMAed that card.

So I ordered a GTX680 that is faster than a 7970 at $50 less and the same price as my tier 2 7950.

NO BRAINER there, yes I ordered one. EVGA REFERENCE with a great warranty.

Even if it wasn't for the defective non-reference cooler, it still makes no sense that AMD's tier 2 card is the same price as Nvidia's high end which is faster than AMD's high end.

Amd 7970 at $400 and then we are talking, that is about what it is worth.

As an HD 7970 owner, my first my reaction was panic when I saw the stock vs stock results. But after looking at the OC vs OC results on the LinusTechTips YouTube channel, I'm indifferent.

1125MHz HD 7970 vs 1250MHz GTX 680 via boost

Linus did OC the HD 7970 memory to 1575MHz as well, which seems to make up a lot of ground even at the 1080p resolution he tested at. if we think about this objectively for a second, we can assume the GDDR5 chips are capable of around the same max clocks. The difference here is Tahiti achieves the same theoretical bandwidth at lower clocks because of the wider memory bus. This could end up being a slight detriment to the GTX 680 as both core and memory are overclocked to their fullest.

I don't have that kind of cash, so I'll either be picking up a second 6850, or waiting 6 months and seeing if there's any card in the $200 range that would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Yes, if you can manage a good enough overclock the 7970 can make up for its price difference, it's at stock or the lower factory overclocks that it's now overpriced by $50-100.
