GTX 660 vs AMD 7870

even a factory oced 660 is dropping to mid 30s when trying to run physx effects in BL 2.

I just dont see how physx is a selling point for a single mid range gpu as to run it properly(60 fps) in newer games you really need a high end card and a dedicated card for physx.

you can run a card for years with increased voltage/clocks (have you seen how long people kept their oc'ed 8800s ?)

I'd say that's even, wouldn't you? So you've shown with a 24% overclock, and a huge memory overclock the a more expensive 7870 is about even with a stock 660Ti reference card.

As I already said to the OP the only way he's going to be able to run high fps with high graphical settings and PhysX is if he keeps his 460 as a dedicated card. The point has moved towards the 660 Ti being a better card, better value, and better performance option at this point vs the 7870.

I'd say 660Ti with BL2 and rebate is the very best this OP is going to do. Gets CUDA, gets PhysX and BL2 is loaded with it.

The radeon does NOT have particle feature, or just not like nvidia does?
I mean, looking at this picture, if its THAT different from physx and without it, I would go with nvidia, but I'm not sure if it works like that, the AMD card will NOT have details like that, or just less details?

If you want PhysX (the extra IQ in BL2), get an NV card. Although, I would recommend you go for the GTX660Ti. This one for $285.

no, they really don't . The 640 is demolished by the 7750 at the same price point, the 650 is demolished by the 7770 which around the same price point, the 660 is beaten (not demolished) by the 7870 and IS demolished when they're oc'ed, same thing goes for the 660 ti and 7950 although you can find a 7950 for $260 and oc it past 670 oc levels and by extension the 670 and 7970, and finally the 680 is bested by the 7970 ghz edition . So no nvidia doesn't have any cards worth buying unless you're case constrained .

Balla doesn't buy AMD cards, even if they are 50% cheaper with the same performance. Also, only NV cards can overclock 40-50% like his 470s. HD7950 + overclocking is not an option.

I'm still kinda fascinated with the physx effects which amd doesnt have. Gaming gets so realistic, too bad few game titles have physx, or am I wrong?

If you Google it you'll find loads of discussions on PhysX, but pretty much it's a gimmick. The reason so few games have it is NVIDIA pays developers to only develop effects for their cards using their physics engine. That costs a lot of money and also few developers are willing to risk segregating their audiences. Other developers simply code for similar effects using more universal methods. Also, DirectCompute is up and coming which is an open standard and will do what PhysX does and more. Finally, unless you're buying a GTX 680, you'll be hard-pressed to maintain decent frame rates while calculating PhysX at the same time (something NVIDIA conveniently doesn't mention). What does this all mean? Don't buy a card just for PhysX, no matter how much NVIDIA's marketing wants you to (and there are enough members on this board who do just that, check their signatures before you think you're getting an honest answer).

It tends to choke when you really push graphics quality, something the 7870 doesn't do. Do you think you'll be overclocking? If so, a 7950 on sale will without a doubt get you the best performance simply because it's an overclocking monster. If you want something more plug and play, a 7870 or a GTX 660 Ti would be better. The GTX 660 is just too neutered to be a good value at its current price.

you got your facts wrong dude a 7870 costs less than a 660ti and a little bit more than a 660, BUT here's the difference between the 660 and the 7870 :
When oc'ed 660 is BEATEN by a stock 660ti by an average of more than %7 according to xbitlabs, however the 7870 beats the stock 660ti by about 3% (this is at 1080p without aa) .

But this is all irrelevant the 7950 at 260 is hands down the best way to go 7970ghz/680 performance at a $260 price tag is unmistakably amazing value

Arguably a better deal since it comes with Sleeping Dogs (supposedly a great game). I'm sure you could sell it for $20+ to make this card cheaper anyway. I hadn't realized the 7950 prices drops had kicked in, you'd be foolish not to pick up this performance for this cheap.

The 7950 being quoted is $280, less $20 going through the hassle of selling a game that is bundled with AMD cards and has sold 200,000 copies total, so $260, plus $60 for BL2, 7950 is looking like $320.

the 660 comes with no game, the 7870 comes with a $50 game (the options considered by OP), as the 7950 do, and the 660 Ti comes with a $60 game, but the overall price to pay is higher for the 660 Ti, about the game, for some this might not be so important (I can see someone who wants to wait to expend the extra $60 later, maybe wait for bugs to be fixed, or even pay less when the price naturally drops)
