Gtx 1080 underperforming, is it The cpu ?

Well hello there.

Just recently bought myself a nice msi Gtx 1080 gaming x 8g graphics card. Before i ran a gtx 980.
My specs are:
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Motherboard
Intel Core i7 4771 / 3.5 GHz processor
LGA1150
Msi gtx 1080 gaming x 8g
Corsair Hydro Series H75
16gb ram corsair vengaence
Samsung evo850 250gb ssd
1tb harddisk
Benq 2720z 144hz monitor.

Now my problem.
When playing battlefield 1 all 4 cpu cores run at 100% and gpu usage is spiking like crazy. Fps 70-85 on ultra. Stuttering.
When playing playerunknowns battlegrounds before i was getting like 70-80 Fps with The gtx980 and now with The 1080 barely 60 and gpu usage is like 60-80%. Cpu 80-90. Also some stuttering.
With The uniheaven benchmark it scores like all other 1080's pretty damn good.
Whats wrong? Is The 1920x1080 at 144hz just too soft for the 1080? Do i need to sell The 144hz monitor and go for something else?
Or is the processor bottlenecking. (i7 4771) So far i know it is a pretty good cpu.
Guys please help me out because i would like to see its full potential and i'm not a professional in this.
Greetings
Steve

Its either your PSU or the GPU itself that is causing the issues.

I'd reinstall the drivers again, use DDU and uninstall in safe mode, just to make sure that isn't causing the issues and check it off.

I did reinstall The drivers again. Using ddu and in safe mode. Can you tell me how i can test if The psu is failing?
I don't think its The gpu because it performs like it should in te benchmarks

You can also log what the clock speeds and temps are when gaming, to see if some throttling is going on with either the GPU (more likely, since it's the new variable) or CPU. That would be my first guess. Short benchmarks generally don't tax the GPU or CPU for long enough to catch all instances of throttling.

A hyperthreaded quad core (even Haswell era) like the i7 4771 shouldn't be bottlenecking the 1080. An i5, maybe, in those specific newer games.

Underperformance usually isn't the PSU. If it's failing it would more likely produce crashes, blue screen of death, or sudden shutdown, at least it's more common in my experience. I'd rule out throttling and possible software issues first, since testing or replacing the PSU involves removing it.

Could ypu tell me wat throttling means. And whats causing it ? Im pretty much a noob.

No problem. Throttling (in this case I mean thermal throttling) means a component (like the video card or CPU) is overheating, and automatically runs at a lower speed in order to keep temperatures from getting too high. Usually you'll notice fans getting louder before that happens, but the best way to know if it's happening is to use monitoring software (e.g. HWMonitor, GPU-Z, Precision-X, etc) to see if the temperatures are excessive.

With the GPU utilization that low it's either throttling or the CPU is. Keep HWMonitor open (with the CPU and GPU sections expanded) while playing Battlefield 1 or PUBG for a while, and see what the min and max temperatures are. 20-30 minutes would be enough to do it.

Thanks.
I'm learning new things.
I use afterburner to monitor the temps and they where all normal. Neer ecxeeding 65degrees. Cpu and gpu

Not yet tried that for 30min. Is this possible with afterburner?

It might be, but HWMonitor (or AIDA64, which has a free trial) tracks minimum and maximum for both CPU and GPU, so that's what I would recommend. HWMonitor is free and there's a "portable" version, so you don't even have to install it to use it.

In 2 hours im home and will try that. Let you know. Play both games for half an hour with hwmonitor

Ok buddy. Got the hwmonitor installed and starting battlefield 1. Play like half an hour right?

15 minutes would probably be enough. If you encounter the stuttering and drop in FPS at that point, I'd minimize and check what max temp it says in HWMonitor under your GPU and CPU.

Temps all normal. Highest 53"c in cpu 64"c gpu. But cpu cores all four at 100%usage. And gpu usage like 60%. So that is where the stutter comes from i quess. Everything in ultra so gpu usage should be 99%.
I dont get it

Yeah, CPU usage shouldn't be that high. If you run taskmanager, is all or close to all 100% going to the game, and is it at 3.5GHz at the time? If so, it's bottlenecking. I don't have an i7 4771, so I couldn't tell you if that's normal, but from looking online it probably shouldn't be using that much CPU, not without higher FPS at 1080p.

What version GeForce driver are you using?

EDIT: You can also try updating your motherboard's BIOS (1.9 appears to be the latest) if you haven't already.

With playerunknowns battlegrounds.
Gpu usage like 80-95% and cpu usage is around 65-70% at all cores. Im now using 385.41 driver version. Ok. I will check The bios update.

Oh, and check in the BIOS to make sure hyperthreading is enabled, under Overclocking/CPU features. I don't think there's any reason it wouldn't be, but it would easily explain why CPU is getting pegged.

If you update, make sure it's still enabled after update.

Got version v1.9 already. Hpet is enabled. Yesterday i read somewhere that it should be disabled. Tried that. Didnt work. So 1.9 and Hpet enabled.
Fresh install Windows 10?

You checked to make sure hyperthreading is enabled, correct? If so, fresh install of Windows might solve the issue, but at this point I'm stumped (someone else may have an idea). It likely wouldn't hurt, though, assuming you have a backup of your data.

I mean there are guides that take you through steps to check stuff off one by one, that is the best way going around solving these types of problems.

It could literally be anything. viruses on your pc, too much clutter and fragmented hdd, it could be erroneous driver installation, corrupted windows, psu issue, cpu issue, ram issue, gpu issue, dust issue, etc...

Again there are good guides online to go through various steps one by one and check off stuff one by one until you find and fix your problem.

In those MMO/Multiplayer games you are cpu bottleneck.
Btw how fast ram you have?

You sure? Like 10min ago i was playing ghost recon wildlands and it runs great. Only battlefield 1 and pubg are running like crap. With my gtx980 there were nog problems. So i dont think it is the cpu
