Perhaps he's just more interested in games meant for more mature gamers. Like WoW, or Halo.

Actually he's against WoW for the same "reasons" as I recall. He's probably one of those people who think violent video games really cause violence and aren't just a defense attorney's only hope 😛

It's mostly because it's a bad port. I think it probably will improve a lot with patches down the road...but still it was $55 after tax. Even though I got it as a birthday present, I still have buyer's remorse 😛

This is what the game looks like with all the video settings maxed out: my screenshot - I've seen other screenshots that don't look like that though, I don't know what the deal is. As I mentioned before I've tried all different kinds of video settings.

Yeah, I addressed this in my post. The game needs a patch, but that doesn't mean it is a "bad port."

As for your screenshot, the game looks better than that on my system.

Well, many more people would disagree with you than agree 🙂

The video problems I'm having seem to be related to lighting/bloom affects, which of course you are not able to change at all. There's some slightly white vertical white stripes caused by the lighting, as well as civilian's shadows being projected hugely onto buildings for some reason. Will probably figure out tonight after I work on the game for another hour or two :/

Took another SS also

I'm against WoW because it's the MMO that was designed for and markets to the lowest common denominator amongst gamers. Consider all the incredible mind-blowing things you could do with an MMO. WoW does none of it. You all supported that kind of stale creativity by gobbling it up with both hands.

My post about GTA was a joke. I played San Andreas and liked it. 🙂

eh just wait for few patches for performance improvement and by that time it will drop a bit in price, no?

i can't imagine playing a game that runs worse than crysis. i won't even attempt to play it. at least i gave crysis a try because it looks amazing.

20% view distance out of 100 sounds pretty crappy. on Battlefield games, i can't play unless its 100%.

The thing with that is, keep in mind 20% is already pretty good. I don't buy Rockstar's excuses on the performance being 'future proof' in gengeral, but it's easy to imagine they are in that respect - it couldn't have been too hard to include view distance levels that are just completely ridiculous.

I personally play with 10% (it runs fine at higher, but starts stuttering - memory leak - earlier), and it looks fine.

Says who? The critics are lavishing praise on it once again, and the vast majority of gamers don't even know what a port is. Most people I know who game do not post on any forums, they just buy a game, play it, and move on with their life.

I'm certainly enjoying the game. I think it rocks. So many little things that add to the game, too.

who's to say Rockstar will release patches? In the past they haven't been exactly good about patching games. And maybe even with patches it'll still run like turds. I don't care how popular this game is, I'm always skeptical about patches that improve performance that much. Hell I'm still waiting for Activision to release a GH III PC patch. If GH III doesn't play well on my box I won't expect GTA IV to ever lol.

GTA IV is a bad port, the graphics aren't that good, FC2 looks better and runs probably 3 times as fast on any given hardware.

I've got two copies of FC2 sitting here that I didn't pay for, and not even thinking about opening. Of course, I was happy to plop down $50 for GTA4 and had the box opened before I even got home.

I can understand complaints from those who need a patch. But the other naysayers, I don't get. Anyone who liked previous GTA games would love the new one.

No one's doubting the game itself is excellent. I've played both the Vice City and San Andreas ports and had no trouble with either one. Different engine of course.

The problem is most people are unable to actually play/enjoy the game due to errors or graphical problems which shouldn't exist. I haven't heard so much about the problems I'm having which are with lighting/bloom, so I'm going to do what I can to fix that today. All I can think of is reinstalling video drivers, though I have no video problems with any other games I play. I think I'll be playing this game without many troubles pretty soon though.

The 'critics' are lavishing praise on it simply because it's grand theft auto. As for comparative user reviews...

IGN: 9.2

READER AVERAGE: 4.3 out of 181 ratings.

Does anyone know if there is anyway to set my controls on my keyboard to steer please? I want to set them to something else instead of w for forward, a for left, d for right, and x for reserve.

I for one like the game. I see no problems with the way it was released, and does not seem buggy, or unfinished to me. It could use a patch, but what game couldn't? (then again, I'm coming fresh from COD5 which 75% of the people who buy the game, can't get it to work for some reason)

I'm running a very basic midrange machine, and have excellent graphics. My only complaint is the kind of "fuzzy" effect that the shadows give. Running 8800GTS 620mb in SLi, and 4GB with no hesitation or stuttering. Very smooth gameplay.

My complaint is the push for the 360 controller. If I wanted to use a 360 controller, I'd buy a 360. I like the keyboard and mouse for my person controls, but want to use my wheel and pedals for cars. That is the biggest dissapointment, I can't use my MOMO setup to drive, but found it very easy to get around once I spent an hour running over people.

The thing I love the most,.. THE STRIP CLUBS!! I spend all my money getting lap dances,.. it rules!!!

people are reporting a quadcore is pretty much needed for smooth gameplay (min 30 FPS)

so looks like I'm not buying GTA4 since I got a dual

Yea, wait until they release some kind of patch to address this...IF they address this!

That post pretty much sums up everything

This link was posted on the GTA forums:

(that's the 2nd page of the article).

I guess this confirms what everyone has been saying- a quad is pretty much necessary... and your GPU doesn't really make THAT much of a difference.

(I guess that's why me running a Q6600 @ 3.6 with my ATI 4850 is doing much better than people with dual cores and nvidia 280 cards)

So, a lot of people are going to start saying "told you so!!!! quads are better!!! what say you now??!?!?!?!" lol. while that is tempting to say-

Yes, quads are OF COURSE more powerful (that's why I bought one, duh). However, I think Rockstar decided to put all that spare power to use.... and rather than concentrate on changing how the game engine renders and calculates certain things, they just used a brute-force approach. Allow me to... explain my theory:

----Earlier in the year, at Rockstar:

Boss: "Well Joe, how is that port coming?"

Joe: "I gotta tell you boss..... we need to think about using some different algorithms and allocating the resources differently....."

Boss: "What are you saying?! Oh shit... here we go... I *ahem* we promised corporate a fast turn around... can't you just... slap some more mhz on that bitch?"

John: "Yeah boss!!!! Slap the MHZ ON IT!!!!!11111. My box art is almost done... it's so freaking sweet!"

Joe: "No... no.... we need to make this game scale well.... this isn't a good idea... we're going to alienate a lot of gamers..."

Boss: "That is not your concern, Joe. Don't they have those new-fangled "Quadz?" I hear they're plenty fast, and a lot of people have them! Hell, my wife just bought me a Dell and it has one!"

John: "Dell r0xors!!!! Check out the cool magnet flap I made for the box!"

Argh...So i updated video drivers to try and cure the fuzz/light problems i was having in the game and now I can't even start the game. Just gives me the "RESC10" error everytime. The nightmare continues :/ - Even if I ever get back into the game, I doubt the light/bloom problems will be gone anyways. Someone told me the RESC10 error is caused by the 8.11 drivers so I'll have to try something else.

Should I made a backup image or used sandboxie.

What? 😛

Installing the ati beta drivers (8.12) got rid of the RESC10 error. Still got weird lighting/shadows though, read a couple other threads of people who are having the same problem now. Still have no idea how to fix it as I've tried everything, but I'm going to try Rockstar Support.

I get fairly smooth gameplay running a 3.0 E6850 DuoCore. I mean its not any worse then Crysis, or Grid or anything like that, seems about the same.
For some reason I can't run my EVGA precision with the game though, it gets hung up and won't load so I don't know what kinda frame rates I get.

Does anyone know if GTA IV has LAN as an option for multiplayer? I hate this LIVE crap. It probably requires that you pay like the $7 a month too right? Such BS.
