GeForce GTX 280+ to fight the 4870X2?

Recently we published an article stating the top 10 reasons to attend NVISION 2008. Well you can now add an 11th reason. *** has learned that NVIDIA will launch the 55nm successor to the GeForce GTX 280 at NVISION 08. We previously had our suspicions that the launch would be at NVISION. If you remember in the past NVIDIA has launched other GPUs at GeForce LAN, which is still a part of NVISION, although the scope of the event is much broader than just a large LAN party.

This visual computing mega-event will be held in San Jose, California from August 25th-27th. According to NVIDIA the host and main sponsor of the event: "NVISION will gather together top visual computing professionals, world-class gamers, innovative artists and designers, and cutting-edge researchers to share their ideas, experiences, and passions."

Apparently NVIDIA was simply giving 55nm a test run with the newly released GeForce 9800 GTX+. Now they will implement the shrinkage to their GeForce GTX 280 and 260 GPUs. Expect the clock, shader, and possibly memory speeds to increase. Although the name is still being finalized it is safe to assume it will carry something like the GeForce GTX 280+ moniker.

When ATI releases their Radeon 4870 X2 in mid August they will certainly have one hot product on their hands. Be rest assured however, that ATI will have very tough competition in the high end segment with the release NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 280+ (if that is what it will be called). It has been important to NVIDIA to have a high end product released around the time schools start again. Expect the pricing war to be very fierce right from launch this time around.

Still within my step-up period too. Gotta love EVGA. :)

How is slight clock increases and a die shrink going to compete with the X2 ?

Depends on how slight the clock increases are. The reference GTX 280 is clocked at 602 core/1107 memory/1292 shaders, obviously the shader clocks are the weak point of the 65nm GTX 280. I think if they could get those clocks closer to the 9800GTX at 670mhz core/1688mhz shader, it would be quite a bit faster.

It won't ;)
Nothing can compare to AMD's CPUs or GPUs, looks like both Intel and NV will be out of business soon:roll:

GTX 280 = 20.3

GRID 1920x1200 4AA

GTX 280 = 67.6

Age of Conan 2560x1600 4AA/16AF

GTX 280 = 22.7

Oblivion 2560x1600 4AA/16AF
4870X2 = 50.3 (+37%)
GTX 280 = 36.8

Average performance advantage over GTX 280: +44%

Doubtful the die shrink is going to change much on the performance side. Although closer performance to 4870x2 will make GTX 280+ more attractive. Let's hope NV can bring GTX 260 performance on 55nm at $200 next.

Let's first look at what it does to a GTX 280.
- Lower power draw
- Lower thermals
- Higher clocks
- Lower costs

There's nothing bad about any company improving their products, be it AMD/ATI, NVIDIA or Intel.

Smaller die will equal less production costs. It may not beat the 4870x2 but it will reduce their costs of manufacturing which increases profits at the same price point.

I am sure at some point they will crap out a 280x2 product like they have the last two generations.

It'll be an additional 15-20% faster than a single 4870 and an additional 15-20% faster or closer to a 4870X2 depending on scaling. That's based on current GT200 clockspeeds and overclockability becoming GT200b's new stock speeds. Should also be additional headroom for overclocking too. Its just more single-GPU performance which is always welcome.

If multi-GPU is your thing and you're ok with the potential problems then I'd say 4850CF or 9800GTX+ SLI or even 9800GX2 are far better choices as they offer similar performance as 4870X2 at a much lower price. The 4870X2 would be my choice for 2560 though for sure.

I doubt they'll get an extra 40% from the move to 55nm. But, they will get more speed on a GPU that should cost less to produce. So, this new card could end up cheaper then the current GTX280 (which I would imagine would go end of life?) while performing better. It probably won't be overall faster, but it should be fast enough to catch the 4800x2 in games that don't really scale well with Crossfire. I'm still getting a 4870 though. :)

Russian sensation, you cant just pick benches from different sites and tally them up.
Anyway If the leadtek GTX280 extreme is any indication of its clock speeds (736/1566/2520), then id say it will close the gap somewhat. Wonder if there is gonig to be a GTX260+ though.

Nvidia has a history of doing a paper launch to coincide with the release of better performing ATI parts.

I hope they break with their tradition :)

well the 260 is just 280s with parts of the chip 'turned off'. so they scavenge the low yield parts and use them as 260s. with the 280+ yields should be alittle better, so we may see more 280s than 260s. but i agree with everyone, 280+ cannot beat 4870x2 and i doubt they will do a 280x2 and price it at close to $900. just not worth it.

Maybe they'll pull a 7800gtx512, overvolt and overclock the hell out of it to compete with the 4870x2. They'll be in a desperate situation for the top spot, so who knows how far they'll go.

that's just stupid. 4870x2 is ~ 45% faster than gtx 280, do you think that a 15 % or so overclock will magically make up all that ground?

Come August I should have a nice choice: a 1 GB 4870 or a 55 nm GTX280.

if you're buying a $500+ 55nm gt200b, why not get the R700, which I'm sure will still be faster & more mature...

9800gx2~gtx280, right? if 4870x2 is 45% faster than them, how is that roughly equivalent?

Why would I pick a multi-GPU solution when I can have a single GPU instead?

With the 4870 X2, you get 90% the performance of the GTX 280 even when Crossfire scales 0%. When Crossfire scales even horribly, you get much better performance. When Crossfire scales well, which fortunately is a lot of the time, you get amazing performance far beyond the GTX 280.

You can have a single-GPU, but it is not going to bring the same performance. That's why you would pick R700. And thankfully this time around there are no microstutter issues. So there is really no reason NOT to get 4870 X2 at this time. Unless you are concerned abou the power consumption, but with a 750W you have nothing to worry about. For me 4870 X2 wouldn't be feasible because I have a 520W.

Of course if GTX 280+ offers the same level of performance within a single GPU as the 4870 X2 does when it scales well, then that is another story and I'd recommend it over R700. But I doubt that will happen.

R700 is different than R680 - not only does it eliminate microstutter, but the single-GPU performance is good enough that even when CF doesn't scale, you are getting world class performance. Then all the games in which CF does scale.... there is no competition. There are no real downsides.

I'll probably step up to this GTX 280+, so hopefully it will be a big upgrade. Hopefully for one the shader clock is significantly improved, because that is one of the current weak points of GT200.

Actually it appears as though the Leadtek clocks were wrong. Some shop in the UK that started all the rumors just amended their site. Article at XS The real clocks are 666/1404/2214.

Hopefully the GTX 280+ will bring a decent increase in clock speed.

Instead of separating those benches into TechReport and Anandtech I just put them together for ease of browsing. I showed different games anyways. If you compared the games that overlap (i.e. GRID), the performance conclusion is the same - 4870x2 is faster than GTX280. But if you compare within each site, respectively, either for TechReport or for Anandtech 4870X2 is superior. I can see how my 44% conclusion is misleading since I averaged out the test scores from 2 sites. Point well taken.

However, this is just a ball park figure to show us that a die shrink probably won't be sufficient for GTX280 to catch up. And mind you I was the first one to be wrong saying GTX280 won this round of graphics wars before 4870 was released dismissing ATI's "480SP" card....so I am not trying to be biased towards ATI.

I can see how GTX280 can be appealing for it is a single card and will run cooler.

very well said, unless the multigpu performed like a single without needing the crossfire or sli profiles.
