Everybody is piling on after hearing only one side of a story. It's just human nature, but it doesn't make it right. It would be interesting to hear the recruiter's side. At least it would provide more insight.

On thing that stands out is that a college would take a random phone call from an anonymous person who says some other person has decided not to attend at this time. It doesn't make any sense at all.

There is more to the story.

This is a very old practice. You wont stop anything IMO. In 1989 I had one that was worse than the Terminator asking for FelixDeKat to join the Army. Every other day, a call. I was happy going to a junior college hoping to transfer later. Finally I told him I joined the Navy and the calls stopped for about a month, then he came looking for his "John Conner" again.

They are very persuasive to someone who doesnt know what they really want in life. They know all the angles because their livelyhood depends on recruits. Once they finally get you to the office, you need to be a master get out. They remember every fact you give them, notice every detail and nuance of your behavior, clothing and background. Maintain constant, unblinking eye contact. Answer every question in an even tempered and clear voice without hesitation. Ply you with facts, figures, paperwork and videos. Introduce you to others in really nice uniforms with lots of medals who act the same way he does. In a matter of time you will see things their way. "Its not so bad" (and to some it isnt, it just wasnt for me).

I have several family members who serve and who have served and more power to them, but if its not what you want, you dont have to join. Period.

I scored a 98 on my aptitude test but i put down the wrong phone number and email on my forms so they wouldnt call. But in this case, i would kill someone if they jeopardized my acceptance to UCLA.

I did my four for the Corps, and I still hate recruiters. usually a lying bunch of bastards who only care about getting a signature on the bottom line.

(even though that was NOT the case with me. I got EXACTLY what I asked for...rifleman in a USMC rifle company...in Vietnam.)

I've known way too many people dicked around by recruiters in all branches to have any real respect for any of them anymore.

Recruiters pull a lot of shady stunts, and I find it loathsome. I took part in the program where you assist at your recruiter's office for a week or two between tech school and your first duty assignment. Between that and talking to some of the guys in my flight, I feel like any of these guys doing that sort of thing need someone to come down on them, hard.

You should also contact the local school board with your complaint to see whether they can stop allowing Marine recruiters into the school, on the basis that this guy abused his authority and jeopardized you son's future. It might wake up the local Marine office to be banned from high schools. I don't know your local laws, so I'm not sure why you say, "Schools have to allow recruiters to set up shop & distribute information to students."

If they allow recruiting for jobs at the school, then they have to allow military recruiters as well.

If the story is accurate, then you must report this to the recruiter's CO, and complain to the school about your son being pulled out of a study hall and being harassed.

I tried so hard to get out of being annoyed by these guys in high school. I was told the asfab test was used by them for recruitment and not much else, so i made sure to fail it (I drew pictures with the bubbles). But that didn't stop them. I got constant calls from the navy and marines. The army got the hint on day one when I told the guy that my family had been a military family and we were not going down that road again. The other's did not.

In the end I started fucking with them. I'd tell them I was interested and setup an appointment. When I did show I would ignore their calls and call them a few days later and tell them that I was sorry, but I was too high to drive. Then I started revealing too much "personal" information such as telling them I was on a bunch of drugs, or busy doing 3-ways with my friend and his girlfriend. The navy recruiter was the first to stop calling. The marines took a lot longer. That guy called for almost a year. I finally leveled with him. I said "Look man, my goal in all this is to waste so much of your time your recruitment goals are not met and you get into shit. So just know that all I will ever do is waste your time. I already have a bright future ahead of me and it doesn't involve being told what to do and belittled by a bunch of meatheads. Even if I did join up, it would be as an officer and in the airforce where I can have a nice cushy life of luxury." He never called back.

As I matured however, I watched about 8 of my friends on their paths though the military. Most were grunts and they liked their experiences (except those who got sucked into iraq). Two of them washed out in the navy and airforce. But the ones who did go to college then join as officers have a very nice career. Sometimes I envy them.

Then of course my wife points out that I get to make my own hours and pick what I'm going to do and if I do have an argument with my boss I can always up and move. That makes me happy again.

My high school forced everybody to take the ASVAB and I aced it too. That was almost 4 years ago and I'm still getting contacted on a somewhat regular basis. Its picked up more that I'm getting close to my senior year of college. They've been trying to persuade me to not look for jobs my senior year of college and join the military instead.
