Wow, that is amazingly messed up. I would go in person to the local recruiting office and ask to speak to his supervisor, issue a formal complaint, make it clear in no uncertain terms that that recruiter is never to contact son/family/college on behalf of son ever again and that any violation of that will both go to court and go up the chain of command.

I went through something similar in high school. I basically aced the ASVAB and so I had recruiters beating down my door. They can be a pain in the ass sometimes and will make promises they cannot keep. I learned that last part the hard way. One way to deal with it is to talk to the recruiter yourself. Or if you really want to make him pissed, tell him the Army gave your son a much better deal

That totally sucks. Would complaining even do anything. Ibet the military is so desperate they'd just transfer him to another office

So far, the high school's guidance department has been made fully aware of the problem, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow for me to get the name & follow up.

DO these Recruiters get a commission for every warm body they cajole into enlisting?

Sort of.
The recruit has to finish basic before the recruiter sees any benefit.
Good recruiters get fast tracked for promotions.

What the fuck?!? How the hell can he call up a college and say 'uh so and so wants to delay admission... yeah you can trust me'? There has to be some flow of information that shouldn't be happening too.

The son probably gave the recruiter too much personal info.
Now that he got screwed, he won't make that same mistake again for the rest of his life.

Military recruiters are literally human garbage. There was a case where a couple of recruiters tricked an underage autistic kid to sign on the dotted line without his parent's permission.

Desperate for what? Recruits?

The Armed Forces have been meeting their recruiting expectations each year for the pass 4 years or so. Even the Army.

Not underaged (an old story), but as you can tell, the recruiters were shady as hell and were later disciplined for it

You know what they say, once you're in, the Corp is your family.

Be that as it may, that was WAY over the line. I have a feeling if you press the issue with the appropriate gov channels, your son's education may end up fully paid for in order to make this issue go away. It's the American way!

get every bit of hard evidence you can find on the recruiters activities with regard to your son, get affidavits if you can, then file a complaint with the Marine Corp or JAG.

I can understand having a gung ho recruiter but having one sabotage someones stated future is not tolerable.

This. And the recruiting office. And the school - get the recruiter banned from recruiting there.

Eh, I'm very very very pro military but they have a pretty messed up incentive program for their recruiters that can sometimes encourage the recruiters to be underhanded. My housemate's brother was told to lie about his psychological history (hide the use of prescription anti-depressents, suicide attempts, etc) and enlisted him in the Marines. He's still in it but it's been hell for him and he was a very poor addition to his unit because of his personal mental health problems.

[edit] ZV and Ors, if you read this please do not discuss IRL

Either join up with a bunch of underachievers with guns terrorizing people wearing different colors, or join a gang (LOL, saw that coming)

.. but shit at least he didn't go through the trouble of actually jeopardizing my future.

I'm not putting down the armed services - I have a lot of respect for those who are willing to put their lives on the line for the protection of our country from enemies (both real & imagined, as it seems in the case of Bush's war, which isn't the fault of our service personnel.) If my son *wanted* to join the Marines, I'd support him 100%. But, he's done nothing but talk about college & his career path for the past year. I know, and it's been reinforced by his reaction yesterday & today at home, that he has absolutely no interest in the armed services. Please don't turn this into an anti-armed services thread.

Ask them who's in charge of their office or regionally, and complain up the ladder.
If that doesn't work, contacting local media and/or lawyer might be a (last) option.

This, but do not let it go. That recruiter should be in a court martial as he could have screwed up your son's future. Whatever you do, do not drop the issue and make sure you update us.

Yeah, sure. The marines are turning recruits away, they're hardly desperate like the Army. The OP's kid probably isn't telling the whole story. So there are a couple options: the school lied, or the OP's kid lied.

At least this is what the Marines will say.

OP: Don't waste your time and effort for nothing, because I guarantee nothing will ever come of it. Tell your kid lesson learned and move on.

For what it's worth, I'm satisfied that my son's life is back on the track it was. However, I have a vested interest in the well-being of the students at that school - I don't want to see any of the other students get screwed up as a result of practices like this.

As far as my kid not telling the whole story, a teacher at the school talked to me about how frustrated my son was, trying to get the recruiter to accept "no" as an answer. Til then, I had no idea anything was going on. She was the one who dragged my son off to the math class that he was missing from, with my son thanking her. (fwiw, he has the highest average in that math course - *finally* he does good in math, despite having a math teacher for a father.)

what a ass. talk to the recruiters officer and raise holy hell.

i was accepted to be a Air Force recruiter and my station would have been in St, George Utah. I had orders in my hand and after lots of thinking i turned them down and decided to separate from the air force after 10 years.
