Yeah it was just the wording that gots me confused. It's not really $25 off $50 like I thought. It's $25 for $50 (i guess a giftcard of some sort). Groupon isn't a coupon at all (at least not in this case).

This scenario is what I originally thought, and that scenario would not make any sense.

You've still only paid $25 for $50 worth of merchandise.

Right. So there's no deal at all. You're just paying 25 dollars for a coupon for 25 dollars off a purchase of 50 bucks.

25 dollars money out to groupon
50 dollars out money to buy at store
75 dollars money out
then 25 dollars off
=50 dollars

If it cost $25 dollars for a $50 dollar gift certificate = PROFIT!
If it is a certificate that cost $25 to get $25 off a $50 dollar purchase = FAIL

That said, I am pretty sure groupon would not sell you a $25 dollar off coupon for $25 dollars.

oh my god how about a real life example here?

I bought a nordstrom rack groupon. $25 for $50 worth of stuff.

I went to nordstrom rack. I "bought" a pair of shoes for $75. When I went to pay, I gave them my groupon. It came up as a nordstrom rack gift card for $50.

The balance due was $25.

My total out of pocket expense was $50 for $75 shoes.


If I'm confusing ya'll with the usage of the word "buy" then I apologize.

Think of it this way. I go to a store and there's a gift card I want to a store I like that has a 50.00 value. I bring it to the register and it rings up for 25.00. I still get the full 50.00 value at the store the gift card is honored at but my total out of pocket is only 25.00

Yes, Spidey! You are right! Millions of people use Groupon and Google just tried to buy Groupon for $5 Billion. And it's all based on tricking people into paying full-retail prices (or even more!) for items and making them think they are getting a discount.

Nearly everyone involved is a complete and utter moron, but you - you've figured it all out! Soylent Green is made from people!
