I like NIN's version of "Hurt" a lot more. I wasn't terribly impressed by Cash's cover (it felt a bit more like he was just speaking it most of the time) - and I have to wonder how much of the praise it's getting is just due to Johnny Cash worship.

Easy choice: I will always love you

I had no clue Whitney wasnt the original composer until a few years ago... She basically took the song and made it her own
Id bet most people like me who were born in the 80s or later still think its her song, just like I did

I assume you disagree then. So what would you call the best song of all time? It's clearly an opinion based thing, some opinions are more wrong than others (like anyone who would name a One Direction song for example).

I join with Ns1 regarding Tool's version of "No Quarter," but to also be upfront about my biases, and at the same time answer your question from above, my singular favorite song is the live version of "Third Eye" featured on Salival by Tool.

Lateralus or echoes or time

I get music is subjective, I just couldn't even make an argument as to why "no quarter" would be best of all time

Not hatin btw, just sayin.

I think All Along The Watchtower takes the cake on this one (and not just because I posted it).

Song that is strongly associated with Jimi Hendrix (no one thinks of Bob), but written and performed first by a music legend (Bob Dylan).

Jimi > Van Halen
Bob > The Kinks
----------------
All Along The Watchtower > You Really Got Me Now

But the song itself:

You Really Got Me > All Along The Watchtower

Led Zeppelin covered a whole ton of blues songs by legends like Muddy Waters. I'd put Zeppelin and Waters up against Jimi and Bob, but it doesn't mean You Shook Me is in the running for greatest cover of all time.

There's a post in this thread about Tool doing a cover of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter... You could put Zep and Tool up against Bob and Jimi, but No Quarter just isn't the greatest song.

Did the cover performances eclipse the originals in the public's eye?

I think the original plays 15x more often on the radio. At least, on the stations I listen to.

I still remember some awards show performance where Sting was performing with Puff Daddy ("I'll Be Watching[Missing] You"). One of the kids I was babysitting excitedly called to her brother: "Come quick! Come quick! Puff Daddy is singing his song...with some white dude!"
