This is probably the only one that can rival Johnny Cash:

Van Halen - You Really Got Me (originally done by the Kinks) I heard an interview with the guys from the Kinks and they say that they now say the song is a Van Halen song that they managed to cover before Van Halen wrote it or something like that.

PedoBear out does me again... Will I ever learn to internets?

SilverPig wins the esoteric "cover that people only know now by the performing band but which was first-performed by a fairly well known band"; which I believe was Lyfer's definition of 'greatest'.

I think All Along The Watchtower takes the cake on this one (and not just because I posted it).

Song that is strongly associated with Jimi Hendrix (no one thinks of Bob), but written and performed first by a music legend (Bob Dylan).

Jimi > Van Halen
Bob > The Kinks
----------------
All Along The Watchtower > You Really Got Me Now

Here are the number of views on the top youtube pages:

All along the Watch Tower
Dylan (1.17m views) Jimmy (2m)

You really got me:
Kinks (4.8m) Van Halen (4.6m)

Looks like the level of esoteric connection is on your side; but the overall popularity is on the other side. But popularity isn't everything; as it is 100% clear that your two major arguments are true a priori.

So I'm forced to agree.

Jimmi's version of "All Along The Watchtower" was a cover of a Bob Dylan song. Another cover where the original artist recognizes it as the definitive version.

Better than the original. Gino Vanelli does a good version too. But it is more just stealing some lyrics.

The Corrs - little wing, cover Hendrix and better, too.
Chris Cornell -Billie Jean

As mentioned above gnr did heaven's door--and better than the original.

These are both on YouTube. On my phone though.

The rest of you tits please say what the link is going to.
