Better than the original. Gino Vanelli does a good version too. But it is more just stealing some lyrics.

The Corrs - little wing, cover Hendrix and better, too.
Chris Cornell -Billie Jean

As mentioned above gnr did heaven's door--and better than the original.

These are both on YouTube. On my phone though.

The rest of you tits please say what the link is going to.

really enjoyed the corrs cover of LW.

if you can find it(used to be on youtube but can't find it now) a band called Indigenous doing their cover of it. my god can that guy play.

Wow, could you have made a more played out choice op? :D

Some of my faves are:

Metallica - The Wait (Killing Joke): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8t2dJZRRW0
Metallica - The Prince (Diamond Head): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_ubQnhIQ5I

honestly Metallica should just do covers. They have a lot of amazing ones. Ami Evil? Crash Course in Brain Surgery, etc.

Melvins - The Ballad of Dwight Fry (Alice Cooper): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGnijAnlW0c
Dayglo Abortions - Almost Cut My Hair (Crosby, Still, and Nash): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs2B4t6QFWw

You look at Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith albums and you'll find a ton of old blues songs they turned up tempo. A lot by Willie Dixon.

The greatest covers are songs that are so good they surpass the original version.
Some people have named some perfect examples in here already so I won't copy those. I have two songs that I think are amazing covers that might not quite surpass the original but come DAMN close.

Tool covering Zeppelin

Donnie Darko anyone? (Gary Jules cover of Tears of Fears)

Also, gotta mention it, a rockingly good cover of Tool by a bunch of music student kids

Tool's No Quarter ECLIPSES LZ's No Quarter

LZ's version just sounds anemic after listening to Tool's version.

Well they're very different songs. The Tool version is VERY heavy and dark, while the Zeppelin version is mellow and somber. I rate Zeppelin No Quarter as the best song of all time though, so Tool's version won't be surpassing it for me.
