I dismissed this movie because you could hear explosions in space in the trailer. Do you still hear explosions in space in the actual movie?

Quoting myself because nobody has answered my question yet.

I just don't get the appeal of this movie.

The trailer implied no story other than "2 abnormally pretty astronauts in full makeup float around space for 2 hours". I can't imagine that being very good. Maybe 30 minutes of build up before shit hits the fan and 30 minutes of resolution afterwards, but even an hour of them floating sounds bad.

And them, at least both, surviving (as is the way of Hollywood) really turns me off. I don't care how beautiful the imagery is, it can't possibly have a good story.

Good question.

To those who saw the movie: How is the shakey cam and blur?

Not shakey or blurry..at least not like any typical action/sci-fi movie sense. Probably a big reason the reason 3D worked so well. Seriously, see it in 3D.

There are definitely times of disorientation, done appropriately so.

You must have missed this one...

Nope. The movie is very scientifically accurate in that it does not depict sound travelling through space. As such, there are some very quiet moments.

From Wikipedia:

Your taste in movies is worse than your taste in chinese food...

Shush! Rush is a really good movie with an excellent soundtrack. I haven't seen Gravity yet, but Rush is my favorite movie so far this year. It doesn't help that every single movie that I had been looking forward to for a while (like the comic book movies) have been awful.

I like Clooney, but Bullock I cannot stand.

I normally hate Bullock, but I think she nailed this one.

George Clooney is good, but the problem is that he just plays as himself. Sandra Bullock is the main human element in the film.

You're the only person saying this.
Not really, it's the most prominent thing I've heard about the movie actually.

:Edit: Not that it matters what others say, it's my personal opinion that they look silly judging by the trailer.

It an hour and a half long and its damn good all the way through. The build up starts about 10 minutes into the movie and rarely lets down.

I like how you can tell the entire story is shit from a 7 minute trailer.

Would this movie be too much to handle for my almost 7yo son?

Thanks

Eh... he'll hear "shit" a few times and "fuck" once... but the rest of the movie is just really intense. If he gets motion sickness, he'll have issues. My son is almost 6 and other than the language, I think he could handle it.

Well, and without spoiling anything, there's also at least a couple of particularly disturbing images. So while your 7 y/o could probably handle it, it's a question of whether he actually should. Personally I wouldn't allow any of my kids under 10 to see it (if I had kids). But I'll leave that decision up to you.

Well damn. If they left out the fuck I'd probably take him.

He's right... I'd forgotten about that. We're not talking gratuitous gore or anything, but certainly disturbing. I wouldn't normally let my son see it, but he's seen cadavers...

I wish I could do 3D. My left eye is slow at refocusing (MS) so 3D stuff is just double images to me :(

So, then please do enlighten me what the story is. Two astronauts in space, doing some kind of repairs, get hit by debris and then float around until they hit the ISS and are rescued?

Pulitzer prize winning story there!

T'would be weird to see a fictional film up for a pulitzer, but whatever.

Part of the enjoyment of film and story is to not know where you are going, and enjoy the ride. I'd rather not be bothered with more than half the films these days, where trailers tell me everything I ever cared to not know about their shitty movies.

For this, all I needed to see was Cuaron (brilliant director), and some artful shots (OMG NO GIANT EXPLOSIONS!) to sell me. Also, Clooney doesn't get involved with bad films.

I didn't know what it would be about, but I knew it would be worth my time

I just saw it and liked it a lot. Bullock really carries the film well. Clooney is a bit too "Clooney" as others have said. I think it would have been better to cast an unknown in that role so your main focus could be on Bullock.

The trailer shows the main premise of the movie, but it certainly doesn't give away the nearly 100 super tense parts of the film. If you're worried that the trailer has given too much away - don't be. Seriously, it only shows like 5% of the mayhem Bullock has to endure.

8.5/10 Would have been a 9.5/10 if Clooney had at least a little personality.

From Wikipedia:

So I just got back from seeing this movie in IMAX 3D, partly in thanks to this comment and other related comments.

While possibly the sound portion was scientifically accurate, the majority of the movie was beyond realism. Huge let down. I spent $31.50 on tickets and would have preferred this movie as a redbox film unfortunately.

7/10 is my rating.

I'll admit it was at least better than the trailer lead me to believe, but that was it. It was unbelievable bull after unbelievable bull. A little here and there I can take, but it was RAMPANT in this film.

I don't mind if a film has unrealistic features, but the movie should NOT be based in realism, which they try to allude to with the facts that they show before the film starts.

Had they kept more realism in the film, it likely would have been excellent.
