I guess I should add a disclaimer: I'm a little biased... Alfonso Cauron immediately became one of my favorite directors when I first saw Children of Men a few years ago. It was right around the time when I started gaining an interest in movie-making and I was taking a couple of film-classes. My mind was blown, particularly because of the camera choreography, sound, and the other technical aspects involved in production. Like, I'd never seen a movie filmed in that way before.
Listen, take some time out of your weekend. Sit down and watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban right in a row.
It has never been more apparent to me just how much of a difference a director can make until I saw Prisoner of Azkaban. I know it's a Harry Potter movie, but it is the Empire Strikes Back of the Harry Potter series. It's incredible. The pacing, the cinematography, the acting. It's almost completely perfect. That's why I became a fan of Cauron. Every HP movie since the third has been an imitation of it, IMO. Cauron gave the HP world life. He made it feel real.
When I first saw the trailer for Gravity, I didn't know what was really going on. It had Clooney and Bullock as astronauts. I'd probably see this anyways when it came out on BR. Then stuff started happening. And that awesome pov shot from Clooney's helmet. It still wasn't a "must-see" for me.
Then, at about the minute mark of the trailer it says 'From Director Alfonso Cuaron." I looked at my wife and said "They can stop now. I'm going to see this movie."
She's still not interested in it. I think she's afraid it will boring. Seriously, they could have just put a wall of text that says "Alfonso Cuaron directs a movie about George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as Astronauts." That would have done it for me.
i was planning on watching a cam. might have to rethink that now
No Cuaron movie could EVER be enjoyed by watching a cam.
