i havent seen a movie in the theater since i got my ht setup, but this one is making me want to go see a movie in the theater. but if i wait i could purchase the 3d bluray for cheaper than seeing it in 3d in the theater. hmmm decisions decisions...

Go find it playing in Dolby ATMOS. There isn't a HT setup in existence that can replicate that experience.

I might be interested in this with a different cast, but Bullock and Clooney seemed ridiculously out of place in the trailer.

Planned a Sunday matinae to see this one. Since I saw the first trailer that invoked my curiousity about the movie. The imagery of Sandra Bullock in a fetal position as if in a womb complete with ambilical cord within a space craft in a movie about what can only be assumed as fighting off an inevitable death got my interest. Of course all the rave reviews seem to also reinforce this is a must see movie.

3D or 2D?
Does 2D do it justice?
Does it go beyond special effects to make the story worthy in 2D?

The trailer for this movie made my wife and I laugh. Then I got a little offended.

Do you know how much work I've put in deploying and keeping those fragile ISS solar arrays safe? But NOOO, George and Sandra have to slam their big fat EMUs into it.

Huh. I had Gravity pegged as probably being "decent but unmemorable". Kind of in the same quality category as Oblivion. Now I really want to see it. Too bad we don't have any imax theaters near me. I'll have to make do with generic movie theater 3d I guess

I won't knock you for for disliking Children of Men. That movie wasn't really for everyone. And yeah, this is completely different. I would say that Gravity is much more accessible and easier to understand.

There is a pretty large group of people who shrugged off the movie because they they didn't like the trailer, which is unfortunate.

I will. That movie was brilliant and completely impervious to negative opinion.

I guess I should add a disclaimer: I'm a little biased... Alfonso Cauron immediately became one of my favorite directors when I first saw Children of Men a few years ago. It was right around the time when I started gaining an interest in movie-making and I was taking a couple of film-classes. My mind was blown, particularly because of the camera choreography, sound, and the other technical aspects involved in production. Like, I'd never seen a movie filmed in that way before.

Listen, take some time out of your weekend. Sit down and watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban right in a row.

It has never been more apparent to me just how much of a difference a director can make until I saw Prisoner of Azkaban. I know it's a Harry Potter movie, but it is the Empire Strikes Back of the Harry Potter series. It's incredible. The pacing, the cinematography, the acting. It's almost completely perfect. That's why I became a fan of Cauron. Every HP movie since the third has been an imitation of it, IMO. Cauron gave the HP world life. He made it feel real.

When I first saw the trailer for Gravity, I didn't know what was really going on. It had Clooney and Bullock as astronauts. I'd probably see this anyways when it came out on BR. Then stuff started happening. And that awesome pov shot from Clooney's helmet. It still wasn't a "must-see" for me.

Then, at about the minute mark of the trailer it says 'From Director Alfonso Cuaron." I looked at my wife and said "They can stop now. I'm going to see this movie."

She's still not interested in it. I think she's afraid it will boring. Seriously, they could have just put a wall of text that says "Alfonso Cuaron directs a movie about George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as Astronauts." That would have done it for me.

i was planning on watching a cam. might have to rethink that now :)

No Cuaron movie could EVER be enjoyed by watching a cam.

I thought this movie looked absolutely dumb due to Sandra Bullock in a space outfit in the trailer. Her and scary just do not mix to me. But, you have swayed me.

I worked at a major move theatre chain for 10 years (5yrs to get through school, 5yrs at their world headquarters after graduating) and that was 10yrs of free movies. I consider myself very subjective at this point and I'm hard to impress. I'll see how this one pans out.

I 2nd him actually. So there's at least 2 :)

3rd. Certain actors take away from movies because no matter what character they're trying to portray, all you can see is the person. Clooney and Bullock are two of those people to me (another would be Tom Cruise).

A valid question.

While their are some slightly unrealistic aspects to the film... some necessary for the story... the concept of no sound in space is pretty well preserved. They use the concept of vibration giving you a sense of sound quite often. Most of the scenes where there is mass destruction use the soundtrack to give you that sense of destruction. The soundtrack to the film was amazingly well crafted and fits the mood throughout. Seeing this film in IMAX 3D is an absolute must. I cannot even begin to tell you just how amazing the experience was. Cuaron has very quickly become one of my top five directors in Hollywood today. It would not surprise me one bit if Gravity wins best picture... especially considering Life of Pi got that consideration last year.

It does seem to be getting rave reviews but for the life of me I cannot figure out what this movie is about. The trailers tell you absolutely nothing about the plot.

I would normally agree with you... and I do for Clooney in this film. He plays yet another suave, smooth talking male figure... but Bullock laid it all out in this one. I was very impressed.

It's better that you not know too much going in. The trailers do a good enough job of explaining. It's a "disaster" film and you're in space. Leave the rest to your anticipation. You will not be disappointed.

I really want to see 'Rush' this weekend so I guess this movie will have to wait until next weekend.

I thought the trailer gave away quite a bit in regard to what to expect from the movie.

They're in space, debris collides with what appears to be what they're working on and/or their equipment, and a colossal shitstorm ensues.
