I thought this movie looked absolutely dumb due to Sandra Bullock in a space outfit in the trailer. Her and scary just do not mix to me.

I was ready to add the movie to my short list until I watched the full trailer and heard her screaming. I dunno why her scream annoys me so, but it just does. Ask Jesse James .. he can explain why.
*shrug*

Looking forward to 'Her' and 'Monuments Men' as well.

For those who don't mind spoilers, here is a short video of Cuaron explaining how he attempted the one shot extended scenes in the film.

You'll see a short example of just how incredible they put this together. Now just imagine seeing this on a 5 story screen and in 3D and you've got yourself one HELL of a ride.

I might be interested in this with a different cast, but Bullock and Clooney seemed ridiculously out of place in the trailer.

I really wonder why they casted them for this movie. It seems on odd choice. The only reason I suspect is you need headliner names to attract people.

It does seem to be getting rave reviews but for the life of me I cannot figure out what this movie is about. The trailers tell you absolutely nothing about the plot.

Agreed. The trailer turned off the GF so I don't know if I can convince her to see it. I only want to see it after seeing all the rave reviews for it as the trailer did nothing. Seeing Rush this weekend so this one will have to wait anyways.

Unpossible! It has Bullock and Clooney.

Watched this movie last night in 3D. Amazing movie. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was everything I imagined it would be. It deserves every bit of praise that it has gotten so far.

2 thumbs way up.

Nitpicking spoilers from the trailer below:

From the trailers it looks like 3 astronauts are on EVA, (which we've only ever done once) from a space shuttle, (which we don't fly anymore) to work on what looks like Hubble with Manned Maneuvering Units (MMU) that we haven't used since the mid 80's. They are then hit by Micrometeorite or Orbital Debris (MMOD), which judging by the massive damage should have been easily tracked by NORAD and a caused the shuttle to cancel the EVA and execute a Debris Avoidance Maneuver (DAM).

Instead the astronauts become free flying and somehow make it to the ISS? The problem with this is Hubble and the ISS aren't at the same altitude and even if they were AND they had a conjunction before the astronauts O2 runs out they aren't in the same orbital inclination. Which means George and Sandra would have hit the ISS at several thousands MPH. Plus the ISS looks like it has Shuttle debris all over it, so ya.

Then it looks like they come home on the Soyuz?

While the movie looks beautiful. I'm not sure I can watch it without nitpicking it to death.

I will be watching this, then--but certainly not in 3D. It may "work" for 3D, but I refuse to support that garbage at any capacity.

We already see the world in 3D. Film is an escape, it is not meant to be the real world. No reason to make an utterly poor replication of what we see outside the theater.

I thought the trailer gave away quite a bit in regard to what to expect from the movie.

They're in space, debris collides with what appears to be what they're working on and/or their equipment, and a colossal shitstorm ensues.

Someone else told me they didn't get it. I thought it couldn't have been clearer. Weird.

Interesting . . . had this movie pegged for bargain bin trash out of the gate.

Indeed. I am 'amazed' at the OP's stellar review, didn't see this coming. I'm always game for a great movie, albeit will always wait till it hits the discount theaters.

Some of these issues you have are explained in the movie, however, some of them are valid nitpicking. Cuaron and his son had to tweak reality a bit to make the story possible. Either way, it's an amazing spectacle to behold and anyone concentrating on some of the minor things they bent for the sake of the story is not their intended audience. Suspend a certain amount of disbelief and you'll be pleasantly rewarded.

I dismissed this movie because you could hear explosions in space in the trailer. Do you still hear explosions in space in the actual movie?

Nope. The movie is very scientifically accurate in that it does not depict sound travelling through space. As such, there are some very quiet moments.

From Wikipedia:

Although the first trailer has audible explosions in it, Cuarón has confirmed that scenes in space will be silent: "They put in explosions [in the trailer]. As we know, there is no sound in space. In the film, we don't do that."

Isn't it better when the trailer doesn't entirely give away the story and make the whole thing predictable? I'd rather it be vague and mysterious just enough to entice me to see it.

But the trailer doesn't entice me to see it. I only got interested after reading reviews.

Dude the trailer sucked and you're the only reason I'm going to see it. You talked it up so much I'm forking out the $15.75/ticket for IMAX 3D.

They need to put you on all their trailers.

I thought it was pretty clear from the commercials that people were in space, something bad happens (with presumably their equipment), and Clooney is tasked with rescuing Bullock (or the other way around) somehow. I think I got the gist of it at least.

I would guess from the way the reviews/ads are selling the whole "humanity" angle that there's no small amount of talking/drama/bonding between them as well.

Beware, spoilers in article:
http://science.time.com/2013/10/01/what-gravity-gets-right-and-wrong-about-space/

There absolutely are a number of inaccuracies, but the idea is to suspend disbelief for these details which really aren't intrusive.

IMO, you're doing yourself a disservice by skipping the movie because you might nitpick.

I've been informed that if you listen to the trailer with your eyes closed it sounds like a Sandra Bullock sex tape.

Is there much "shakey cam" or motion blur in this movie? Would love to go see it but my wife is fairly sensitive to that type of camera work.

Good question.

To those who saw the movie: How is the shakey cam and blur?
