GPU Prices are crazy... what's reasonable for a 1070 or 1080?

I've read all about the bitcoin and etherium mining so I get it... supply and demand.

My question is what is a reasonable price for a 1070 or 1080 right now?

All I see are 1080's for 600 and up. 1070's are at 450 and up. 500 for the better reviewed ones.

That's if they are in stock at all. Unless there are signs this will end soon? I'll wait a week or two if I must but I'm kinda anxious to get my build ordered :)

Well, etherium mining is already heading way, way down, so... I would think a few weeks, and the supply will get much better and the prices will also have returned to normal MSRP levels.

Agreed. Anyone that's paying attention knows that purchasing new equipment to mine with is a losing proposition with difficulty increasing so quickly and the price of ETH being in the dumpster. I give it a month or two and you'll see people unloading used cards and the prices on newegg will plummet.

ETH(bitcoin too) is going up again...I am not sure if we will be abble buy videocards in next few years if this continue.NV and AMD need increase pruduction atleast 10x.

BTW US situation is best in the world. Here in EU you cant buy 470/480/570/580/GTX1060/GTX1070 already few months. And GTX1080/1080TI cost insane money.

It's really crazy right? I go on PCPartPicker every day and search the GTX 1070 or 1080's. Out of stock or crazy high prices.

What about this 1070 for 450 bucks. It's 100 bucks cheaper than any 1080 I can find

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125875

Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Windforce OC Video Card

If you really need a GPU I don't see why not.
But man, I can't do that. Like everyone said, wait and get it at closer to MSRP. You should be able to get that GPU at ~$330.

Even if ETH goes to $500, just with current difficulty increases that's still a full six months just to recoup the cost of the GPU, let alone the rest of the system. That also doesn't factor in additional mining capacity if ETH does spike to $500. It's simply not a wise decision if you have to pay for power at this point.

Yeah just to be clear, I'm not mining. I just want to play XCom 2 and Witcher 3 =p

Paid $350 for that card last year.

Damn. Well ... .I'm probably just going to hold my nose and pay 550 or whatever for a 1080. Just bad timing but my other PC is kinda on it's last legs.

normally I'd recommend searching for the best card possible, preowned, but those are the ones that get snatched up real quick by the mining crowd. I was finally able to save a 290X from a slow non-gaming death for under $200 but it was pure luck. Thanks game of thrones premiere last night!

If you have to buy one now, then it's probably worth going for a 1080. It's not as good at mining, so its price hasn't gone quite as crazy. The price of ETH has dropped in half in the last week, so people might back off for a while. Though, plenty of people will probably just keep buying more hoping it will recover soon.

1070's going for north of $400 are out of the question. I see used and new 1080's going from $450 - $550 which imo isn't a bad deal. So 1080's aren't exactly stellar ($500 is MSRP), but not a bad purchase either. 1070's, 1060's and basically the entire stack of AMD cards (if you can find one) are all terrible deals.

1080Ti's are actually pretty nice too -- Dell had one for $630 a week or so ago. A lot of money but the 1080Ti is a monster, 30-40% faster, so its not one of those situations where you are paying extra for just because its the top dog.

Wow I didn't realize the 1080 Ti was that much faster.

So here's a question.... can I buy everything but the Video Card and try and make my old GTX 570 hold me over til the prices drop? Would I even see any performance increase from my old 2011 Sandy Bridge i5 - 2599k build to this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Simple answer is not to buy them right now as they need to get back to their normal prices before you need to worry about them.

i agree... those prices are purely exploiting the heightened demand at the moment.

i might try best buy or microcenter and see what they got for open box or returns

Don't buy a card right now and wait for prices to drop. Prices are most inflated in North America though, in certain regions you can still find cards with the normal prices.

I'd give it at most a month before prices get back to normal.

If you want to save space and avoid excess cables, consider using an M.2 drive instead of a standard 2.5" drive. It costs a little more to go M.2 (also depends on whether you go M.2 PCI-E vs. SATA), but that motherboard has two M.2 slots. It's practically begging for it!

As for the video card, that's fine. Although, keep in mind that slightly over MSRP for a non-reference card isn't terribly uncommon. The big downside is that you're paying full price where you'd normally be seeing some 5-10% off sales or rebates if the demand wasn't high. As for 1080 vs. 1080 Ti, what you should worry about is dependent upon what you need. If you just want 1080p, the 1080 will be more than enough. If you want to dive into 2560x1440 or 4K, then consider the 1080 Ti. The 1080 can actually do 2560x1440, but you'll likely have to turn a setting or two down to maintain high framerates.

Wait what? 1440p on a 1080 and saying turn down settings? Don't even need to turn down at 4k....

I'm still playing 1440p on a GTX 660 FTW due to this etherium non-sense.

But if I can hold out till volta release.. I should have quite a jump there.

ETH+Bitcoin are again high.Cards wont be in stock with normal prices anytime soon.Probably not untill volta launch next year. And if volta is good at mining then we wont see even volta.

AMD/NV need increase production or PC gaming is dead.

$208 is not high (50% of ATH) and only means a few extra months of profitability. A 1070 will make $125 before breaking even with the cost of electricity. At $500+ a gpu it's a huge losing proposition.

Well I just pulled the trigger on an MSI version of the GTX 1080. Newegg had it for 504.00 before tax and I just said screw it and hit the buy button. Everything else is not well reviewed, or out of stock, or over 600 bucks before tax. Nope. Hell the 1070's are going for over 500!

MSI GeForce GTX 1080 DirectX 12 GTX 1080 DUKE 8G OC 8GB 256-Bit GDDR5X PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Cards

It will probably drop like a stone tomorrow because I bought this. You're all welcome :)

I think you missed the important part... "what you should worry about is dependent upon what you need". I run at 2560x1440 with a 144Hz monitor. If I'm going to execute a game at 2560x1440, I prefer to keep the framerate above 144 FPS. (It has G-Sync, so technically, it doesn't matter.) That's the point that I'm making... what exactly you're trying to do and what you care about can greatly affect what you need to attain it. You can own the same monitor as me, and not even care about hitting 60 FPS, which would greatly reduce the hardware you need to attain it.

Of course, it's also dependent upon the game. :p

Tell this to miners. They still buy out every GPU here in EU.Only 1050TI is for normal price.Btw ETh went from 140USD few days ago to 233USD now.
Bitcoin from 1600USD to 2300USD.
