I'm still using my wonderful GTX980 and its fine for everything I've been playing.

My old GTX 980 is still going strong in another gaming rig of mine. Honestly it played most games at Ultra without issue and I only started having issues with some games around the time the 1080 released. Once I switched to 4K though the GTX 980 needed to go. Even the 1080 FE I have couldn't play some games in ultra 4K. The 1080 Ti though has impressed the hell out of me.

Cost wise I would think right around $500 would be the sweet spot IMO today. $509 will get a nice GTX 1080 by MSI on Newegg. I spent a decent amount more than that when I bought the 1080 FE at release day.

With tax I paid damn near $800 for my GTX1080 Ti with the stupid "miners markup."
