I have enough money for a new build now -___-
Just gotta wait for summer.
No wait. Gotta wait for Q3
You got other problems if the PC lags like that with a Pentium d. I used a Pentium d dell for a long time, put a 8800gt in it and ran cod 4 no problems at all. Either your full of shit or something is wrong with it.
Man you must be stoked huh?
I sat on a freaking overclocked pentium 4 till the e6750 core 2 duo came out like the second half of 2007 as i had a tight budget as well while i had gaming buddies bragging about their e6600s but good things come to those who wait.
Was a sweet computer,it got me maxing out BF2 being the mean purpose.
Good memories.![]()
My dad still thinks my computer is useable. He's the one with a shiny new 2k laptop
I'm not full of shit. I have a x1900 in that dell. Lags hard imho
I dunno, I know someone that used to game on a Pentium D dual-core rig (a Dell), and while slower than a C2D would be, I don't remember him ever complaining about "lagging hard", simply switching between a browser window and MSWord document.
My vote is that something is simply wrong with T_Yamamoto's rig, and a clean format would probably benefit it.
Look for a "Dell XP Pro" or "Dell XP Home" "restore CD". They should work on any Dell that was BIOS-SLP-locked for XP, and should install without needing to punch in any product key.
You've got to realize something.. These "enthusiasts" around here buy these outrageously over-powerful PC's not for functionality, but to express themselves to others, through what they buy.
Thus explaining why inferior pc components would make them feel that others will view them as being inferior as human beings. D:
They are so born and bred to support the "latest and greatest" product being promoted their way, that they actually develop hostility towards older technology as you can see demonstrated in this very thread.
You are so getting a +1 for that.
Something was wrong with your rig. I think, everybody has established that. I've been running a single-core 1.4 Ghz Pentium 3, for a decade and it doesn't lag as hard as "your" Pentium D, which is faster.nope, because I'm lazy and this pos cant seem to have Microsoft Word and a tab of firefox open at the same time (it takes a couple seconds to switch between the two)

oops, x1300. My bad.
And I'll look around. I did a full system restore (back to how it came to me when I first got it). I just want to put clean xp on it.
Do you have the RAM for a newer OS? You'll want 7 when you do the build later anyway, so you could roll that now. Honestly, if you have the ram the experience is just better with 7, IMHO.
2 sticks of 512 and one stick of 256
Ah
That would be a no then, I suppose.
Wait. I'm a member of this forum, still using a Yorkfield- have more money than most of you.. and wouldn't have it any other way (than to use a Yorkfield still).
Reason? It meets my needs, surpasses most peoples needs that have newer CPUs, and to be 100% honest- I really do wear Magnum condoms (when I wear condoms).
I have zero need to compensate, or express myself in any other way. I'm a US citizen as well- and I'm not exactly a nationalist. Other countries have rich cultures and history's going back thousands of years- we buy iPads. It's pathetic, and a culture that needs flushed down the drain (and it will be upon a resource crunch) but there are worse things.
Needless to say, I've been waiting for Broadwell. Unless AMD can trump Intel even harder in the APU section and match my 5870's speed in games, then I'm ditching Intel for an all-integrated rig.
I have received a donated Dell Pentium 4 to use as an extra bitcoin miner. It has 1GB of RAM and I've installed windows 7 32bit. At first, it ran incredibly slow with lag just opening browser windows and such, however I noticed a rather dramatic change when I updated to the latest BIOS from dell. It was kinda shocking to me, because in the past BIOS updates were something used to fix bugs and make a computer more stable, never before had I noticed such a clear performance increase. I just have to assume that the old BIOS was flawed in some basic way that caused it to perform far worse than it should- either that, or the old BIOS wasn't completely compatible with the CPU and somehow was running it "wrong", lack of microcode update maybe?
TL;DR: if your old computer is slower than it should be, check and see if there is a BIOS update available. Don't expect magic, but it may improve things.
+1. True.Just dropped an X2 3800+ into my HTPC last night, wasn't a bad upgrade for $29. Gotta enjoy the little things...
This is a sorely underestimated update. IMO I think too many people still subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra, especially with the BIOS. Pretty much any initial release isn't ironed as well as it could be, the BIOS isn't any different in that regard. Flashes can include microcode changes that involve more features, better voltage handling and/or stability--for pretty much anything soldered to the board and then some. I forget where I read it, but a BIOS dev said they almost never release a full changelog, for competitive reasons among other things. I'm almost religious with driver updates and I likely get a lot of longevity out of my hardware as a result. This is all in spite of the fact that my first OEM BIOS flash resulted in a brick...which is actually my HTPC board.
Hah, wasn't bragging- just saying I can buy whatever I want but have no desire to and don't envy anyone's rig. I've always taken more pride in being able to make a rig last longer than everyone else, back in the day (DOS) this meant very well maintenanced expanded and extended RAM usage. In the early days of 3D it meant tweaking out games to work on an aging Voodoo1 4MB and keeping a system free of bloat. After that it meant overclocking an AMD Athlon to keep the system usable with newer titles.
Now you don't need to work at it, overclocking went from being necessary to make an aging CPU usable to being just for fun (that's what my ~0.5ghz OC was for). The speed is excessive. Thus I'm simply able to coast on what I have for years and simply replacing or repairing parts (if it's a capacitor) when they break.
