Gotta love old tech

Ok, I'll play devils advocate. You have taken thelastjuju's generalization as "no one needs the hardware they are bragging about." (even though that's not what his post says)

Read quote below where he states that there's no need for the computing power people are "insisting" on. I don't see anyone insisting that people need that power.

No, I do understand computer needs.. which is why I don't understand why anybody would need the type of computing power people like you are insisting on. Unless they are using their computers for very nontraditional, professional grade, NASA-like computing power. Or maybe you guys just enjoy flattering yourselves.

Now let's consider your generalization: "yes we do man! and we aren't bragging!"

I didn't say we all do, I said he's generalizing all of us like we all don't need that power which isn't the case. There are plenty of us here that need the power that we put into these things.

If you apply your generalization to everyone on the boards, as you are accusing thelastjuju of doing, your generalization is actually much less accurate overall than his.

Whenever I ask what you people with your overclocked i7's, thousand watt power supplies, and 32gb of ram are actually doing to warrant that type of specs.. you can't ever do it without resorting to some theoretical BS scenario .. and suddenly, you're all professional video editors that need to encode in the background while gaming, or something equally absurd..

LOL he said "you people" and "...suddenly, you're all professional video editors..." and so on. Pretty sure that was a bigger generalization.

Ok, before this thread turns into childish insults and what not, let me clarify: my points was, what does he care what others do with their money and their rigs? No one here is telling him or anyone else that they have to upgrade. He's bitching about what other people spend their money on and then say that none of us actually need that power. I get your point, yes there are those that buy $5k rigs to surf the internet because they have the money, but why bitch about it?

No one needs 6 cores and dual GPUs to game at 1080p, but there are plenty of $2k rigs here intended for exactly that. And those are the people he was primarily referring to. They are easy to spot because they usually list their tablets, phones, cars, lunchbox and pajamas in their sig in addition to their PC components. These people need help because they are relying on clock frequency, benchmark scores and brand recognition as the foundation of their personal identities rather than using their skill set and experiences to forge their own.

Again, I completely agree with this. That is overkill and a bit unneccesary, but so is beefing up a 4 cylinder honda with a turbo, but people do it. Even then, I'm not going to bitch about it. If that's what they want to spend their money on, well more power to them then.

For browsing etc c2d is okay but won't go earlier than that. And for hardcore gaming getting the latest and best is wise if your budget permits

Lol, wrong on so many counts... my sister is still using an Athlon XP machine to browse. But guess what, she's still in high school.

I'm slightly more inclined to agree with you on the gaming part, but there's more to just that than buying the best hardware (I assume we're talking about CPU/GPU, not monitor).

I'm gonna try to oc this pos dell

Dude, just buy an SB i5 right now. Or even an i3. Every thread here is about how slow your Pentium D is, if it really makes you that unhappy just upgrade now. You have the money, as you said. If you earned it by doing work, screw your parents. Your money, your usage.

i was referring to yamamoto. i hope he has at least an edible arrangement in mind before he bricks his dell

lol. making breakfast and giving a gift card.

cant oc this pos

eventhough its my money, parents wont let me order

waiting for summer break!

is it really a pentium d? you realize it would have to run at 10 ghz to give you modern performance right?

i mean, you can BSEL it for a ~30% overclock, but it won't be stable and it will still be years behind even an Athlon II.

I'm running a E2140 (a gift from VirtualLarry) and its load is only 35C

Ivy bridge now runs 50-65 at load.

Gotta love old tech.

but Ivy will nail the E2140 in idle and load power consumption I bet. You got a Killawatt handy? report back if you do.

Nah, he'll just continue to abuse the good nature of the freebies thread and skip having to earn anything.

It's my fault for starting him on his panhandling ways, I offered to send him a video card and CPU because his computer was so old. I didn't know that was only because his parents were punishing him. I thought he was poor.

How long is this punishment? I thought you gave that to him awhile ago.

Its not punishment. Its their way of motivating me.

Just be stealthy and upgrade it discreetly. BTW I'm using a p4 and athlon xp for simple work and they are fine imo...

I might be lighting the flame torch in my direction but I don't really think it's fair to say he abused the freebie thread. His parents have, for whatever reason banned him from buying a CPU, so he found another way to get one. Called being resourceful IMO. If you are giving something away then you should not really care how it is being used after that.

If I've read this correctly, prior to receiving said CPU having Word and FF open at the same time was a total crawl, so his need is equal to that of any other person who would have taken the CPU.

Whilst he clearly isn't in a position right now to offer something back in the freebie thread, he may be in the future.

He did go against the spirit and rules of the freebies thread, by asking for something completely gratis without even offering shipping. PLUS, I'm sure his parents did what they did for a reason. I'm pretty sure that reason was punishment, not "hey, find a way to circumvent our rules".

My dad still thinks my computer is useable. He's the one with a shiny new 2k laptop
