haha.. That's what I was going to say. One of the reason they're dirt cheap is because there is a demand for them. :p

its not the engineers its the marketing people telling the engineers that to fit costs they have to use looser tolerances... of course public opinion lags reality so everyone ignores that GM's fit and finish is as tight as anyone's...

i'm guessing its for his 302, which runs with far more stress than your camry ever will because its a race car.

True, unless there is a proliferation of said parts.

I'm sorry, I thought you said "everyone ignores that GM's fit and finish is as tight as anyone's".

That can't be right can it? I must have misunderstood the whole statement.

then thats higher supply, which tends to lower prices, but a higher demand will still tend to increase the prices relative to a lower demand.

GM's initial fit and finish for the past year was ahead of nissan and right behind toyota and honda

Yeah, I agree. I didn't word myself very well.

I was just trying to say that the parts are so cheap because there are so many floating around.. From dead engines. :p

But I think he's saying that there is a market.

might be true, but here's my anecdotal evidence. I rode in a 2002 grand am, plastic everywhere. It was hard, not nice to touch. plus it had the plastic sh;t on the lower parts of the doors and bumpers, ugly as sin.

I have a 99 accord, and sure there's as much plastic as in the grand am, but when you run your hands over it, its not as hard and ugly as that of the pontiac.

So the pontiac might have no rattles, but I'd rather be in my car because its a nicer feeling.

i don't know about the rest of you but i'd take a 302 over a toyota any day :) abundant, cheap parts that make a lot of power and last forever(unless you add new heads and the engine leans out, right notfred? ;)) btw have you pulled the heads again? did you take pictures of the install? i'd love to see them.

oh, are you getting this crank magnafluxed/checked for cracks? how strong is a stock 302 crank anyways?(and how much power are you putting down with the new heads?)

I'm, for the most part, pleased with the quality of my GMC Envoy. My last car was a 98 Toyota Avalon and the GM compares favorably to it. Granted, the plastic is not quite as "soft", but after a little Maguires it looks just as nice.

I as well have never had to replace a crankshaft on my toyotas or hondas. I'm glad you enjoy having to replace parts on your car ;) If that make you happy then you should definitely keep buying domestic.

Not sure if I'd want to spend my hard earned money on this (which should mirror your Silverado):

If there?s one thing about the Suburban that needs addressing that hasn?t been addressed it?s the cheesiness of so much of the interior?s materials. The front passenger still has more cheap plastic in front of him than the best tipper at a strip club next to the Detroit airport, the door panels? plastic isn?t much better and much of the switch gear feels like Mattel?s sloppy seconds.

http://www.thecarconnection.com/index.asp?article=5928&sid=181&n=157

While domestics are catching up on exterior fit and finish and build quality, they are still light-years behind in interiors. And before you say "Well, it's a truck and that's all," it should be interesting to see how the Nissan Titan's interior build quality/materials are and how it's performance is as a truck. Ford surely has done the full interior makeover with the '04 F-150 and GM should at least TRY.

A) You normally don't need to replace a crank on a car that's making double digit horsepower :p B) Replace "domestic" with "higher powered cars", and you're all set ;)
