for wearing a hat. Apparently, consultants should not wear hats b/c I represent their firm and it gives an unprofessional look. I'd just shrug it off, but given this economy, I am just goign to stop wearing a hat.

Unless you work at McDonalds as a condiment consultant or its "Take your Hat to Work day" you shouldn't be wearing a hat. No hats is spelled out in my company's employee handbook and is probably in theirs.
