I disagree...I've read your posts before...you wear a LOT of hate..in different types, colors, and sizes...but it's still hate...:p

I wore a hard hat nearly every day of my life. If I wasn't in a hard hat, I was in a baseball cap of some kind.
HOWEVER, even I realize that there are some environments where a hat is inappropriate. I take my hat off in restaurants or some businesses, (not while shopping or similar) in school, and I do NOT wear a hat when applying for jobs.

All that being as it may, did you get YELLED at, or just "spoken to" about the hat?

I don't mind getting reamed when I fuck up...but talk to me like a man...don't yell at me like a child. You COULD end up on the ground.

I've been yelled at by the best there is. USMC Drill instructors know how to yell at you...and make their point VERY well...I have no reason to tolerate it from anyone else in any environment.

I see athletes in suits all the time. Just not during games typically. Coaches are almost always in suits off the field in basketball they wear them even on the court. But the OP is a consultant which is a white collar job....hint hint .....WHITE COLLAR.....no room for hats in that environment, its sloppy and unprofessional. If OP wants to wear a hat he should be a landscaper.

Hmmm... so if I'm not misinformed - the custom of not wearing a hat indoors began as a way to discriminate against Jews. Could always bring that up and see what they say. :p

No, what I mean is, if you were say working for the NY Yankees (like George Costanza for example) I don't think it would be unprofessional to wear a hat now and then.

wearing a hat is not stupid, hat-wearers aren't stupid. People who wear hats in professional environments are stupid.

Yes, it is all an ancient style thing, probably dating to the year that suits and ties where considered professional looking. However, that is the way it is.

If I where a business owner, I could care less if someone wore a hat, but you can bet that I would chew out a sales rep. or consultant that wore a hat while meeting a client in a professional environment. It just screams "Dude, I just got out of college and love this sick hat yo!"

Lots of my meetings take place in sh!t plants. I am not wearing nice clthes to that and I am not lettign my hair soak up that smell.

life sucks wear a helmet and the bolded makes you sound like a prissy i love you.

then I am a prissy i love you...i don't care.

I disagree with pretty much everything you have to say there.

This is one of those things were you can disagree all you want, but as long as the people who matter (managers, business owners, clients) feel a certain way, it's in your best interest to conform.

When someday you are in full control of your own paycheck, then do whatever the hell you please.

Fine, but I don't consider that a professional environment. That's an on site meeting. (though, I still would hesitate to wear a hat (Besides a hard hat) in that situation as it can easily send the wrong message.)

While you may not dress your best in those types of meetings, you should still look professional.

It's in my best interest to live in a way that fulfills me, which is exactly what I do.
In my experience, people like that are usually crappy managers/bosses/clients anyway.

I am a consultant and would never dream of wearing a hat. It has nothing to do with my "personal freedom". It has everything to do with perception. I make money for my company based on the perception of my ability. The perception of my ability has many factors. On small factor is my actual ability. Most of the other factors have to do with how I'm perceived. If a client I am working for sees me in flip-flops, shorts, and a baseball cap...they are likely to think twice about signing a $400/hr check.

You can argue that it is their problem...not mine that they have pre-conceived notions of what dictates ability...but the reality is that they have the check book...and I need to do everything ethically possible to ensure they continue to be happy writing those checks.
