1) Shooting somebody at 30 yards is much more difficult than you would think
2) It is the more 'safe' and 'reasonable' thing to do

Well, that sounds nice and all, but under the circumstances described in the OP it would have been a very stupid move. You don't mess with drunks in a campground when you are the one and only person on your team. The guy was in completely unfamiliar territory, very likely miles from any cops. Any kind of weapon could have easily escalated things to where it was a total beatdown from the locals.

A punch in the face sucks, but notice that is where it ended. No one killed, no one in the hospital, no one in jail.

Just reading this story pisses me off. There are SOOOOOO many people like this Hidalgo character where I live. You get enough liquor in them and anything could set them off. Weird thing is, a large portion of them can't fight that well and end up getting their ass handed to them regularly. All I can think when it happens is WTF do you keep doing that?
