Why is dmcowen using the highest price? I can see another station in LA is $3.51. That's why we used advanced, phd level math and the incredibly complex concept of averaging.

mcowen, are you going to take me up on that challenge for $20? Easy money, right? Give me one decent link showing average gas in Chicago ever hit $5 in the history of mankind, literally back through the dawn of time, and I'll send $20 in the mail.

If you lived downtown LA that is what you would be paying.

I never ever used any link showing the fucking average of anything.

I post what I am paying not whatever fucking average you come up with.

What's with you and your buddy's fucking average?

What does an average have to do with what people are paying downtown LA or what people in downtown Chicago are paying right at this fucking moment? Absolutely fucking nothing.

If you lived in downtown LA you would more than likely use public transport.

You sure do seem to be very angry today.

You could have simply said you had no proof of the $5 and therefore are forfeiting the $20 without all the expletives.

And if you're in downtown LA you can also pick the $4.19 option (1541 S Central Ave & 16th St), for example, which if we use your love of rounding puts us down to $4 in LA, agreed?

I have plenty of proof of stations that passed $5.

I can't speak for down town LA as I have never been there.

As for Chicago, I know there is no way I or many others would drive to some parts of the city.

You go ahead and get your ass shot at.

But speak for it is exactly what you did in post 2552. So either you are speaking for it or not.
I have plenty of proof of stations that passed $5.
Are you going to post any of the proof?

Usually Shell stations are 20 cents or so higher then other stations in California. In L.A. there are always some full service stations, kind of on the model of old time stations that check oil, inflate tires, pump the gas and wash windshields that charge a huge premium for their gas in the more elite areas.

If you're in downtown LA you are driving. I actually don't know anyone who uses mass transit in LA. Also, if you're on Wilshire and need gas you might actually pay that high price. Most people though will head to an Arco or a Costco and pay much less.

Either way you guys are all being silly.

Many years ago I was in Death Valley and couldn't get over the mountain due to the heat. It was about 120 degrees and my car was not happy. So I had to backtrack and this used up just enough gas so that I needed to fill up in the middle of Death Valley while I waited for sunset. They were gouging. I mean really gouging. I was really pissed off. $2 a gallon! Can you believe that shit? Gas was still under a buck at a normal station.

What I would do for $2 gas.....

I also remember a station that raised their gas prices to something like $4 a gallon on Sept 12, 2001. I don't remember what gas was at back then but the uproar was so loud that not only did that station never see another customer and go out of business almost immediately, but they couldn't get another station owner or company in there. They literally had to dig the tanks out. Last I saw it was just an empty field there.

edit: stupid link won't work but you can plug in anything and look at averages. 2008 was the worst with LA hitting an average of $4.61

Again, don't give a crap about averages.

For example, way downstate in Illinois they are paying nearly $1 less than up in the city of Chicago.

So what does that have to do with what the driver in Chicago has to pay?

Absolutely fucking nothing.

Already did when it was $5

If you know how to read as you claim you do then go look back and find the posts.
Nope, you never did.
Again, don't give a crap about averages.
I think it's actually because you don't know why they are important here.

Looks like Iran backed down.

So the oil thug traders can stop using that excuse for now for raising oil and gas prices.

On to the next excuse.

After threats, Iran plays down U.S. naval moves

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Saturday it considered the likely return of U.S. warships to the Gulf part of routine activity, backing away from previous warnings to Washington not to re-enter the area.

The statement may be seen as an effort to reduce tensions after Washington said it would respond if Iran made good on a threat to block the Strait of Hormuz - the vital shipping lane for oil exports from the Gulf.

Crude prices have spiked several times this year on fears diplomatic tensions could escalate to military clashes as well as uncertainty about the effect of sanctions on the oil market.

No it is my opinion. You just posted in the mod thread you can post your opinion.

My opinion is I paid $.50. In my defense I haven't looked at the credit card, but I feel like $.50 was the right price.

You can't take that away from me.

My opinion was that rounding was perfectly OK.

You FAIL big time in rounding.

You should go back to school.

Here is a lesson for you

http://www.mathsisfun.com/rounding-numbers.html

Rounding Numbers

Rounding means reducing the digits in a number while trying to keep its value similar. The result is less accurate, but easier to use.

Example: 73 rounded to the nearest ten is 70, because 73 is closer to 70 than to 80.

  • Decide which is the last digit to keep
  • Leave it the same if the next digit is less than 5 (this is called rounding down)
  • But increase it by 1 if the next digit is 5 or more (this is called rounding up)
Example: Round 74 to the nearest 10

  • We want to keep the "7" as it is in the 10s position
  • The next digit is "4" which is less than 5, so no change is needed to "7"
Answer: 70
(74 gets "rounded down")

Example: Round 86 to the nearest 10

  • We want to keep the "8"
  • The next digit is "6" which is 5 or more, so increase the "8" by 1 to "9"
Answer: 90
(86 gets "rounded up")

So: when the first digit removed is 5 or more, increase the last digit remaining by 1.
