I work on a survey crew and a road had washed out in the recent past. We got pictures of it the other day and it looked pretty bad. We arrived there this morning only to find that pictures did this place no justice. It was way worse than we had expected, about 150% more road had washed away since the original pictures were taken, and we didn't realize it was over a 40ft ravine! Anyway, I snapped some pics with my cell phone (sorry in advance for quality) and here they are on at the end of this link.

I love how there are still cable guard rails! You think they'll rebuild it as high next time or go lower so the water goes over instead of washing it out.

I think they will be going to a Bridge......or a bigger culvert. From what one of the residents said, who actually witnessed it wash out, water was damned up behind ice or something, then gave way and took the road with it.

Not sure yet.

Sweet! I used to make some pretty decent money fixing stuff like that...

Surveyor huh? You folks and your fucking stakes...do you realize how dammed difficult it is sometimes to run them ALL over? Put them in places where I can get to them with less trouble, will ya? ;)

Yes, over 30 years as a heavy equipment operator, mostly as a crane operator...but I've spent my time in dirt iron as well. I've been cussed by the surveyors a time or two for taking out the stakes, batter boards, even benchmarks...:D

Looks like a good place for an arch culvert to allow for plenty of drainage to get through and have a solid base for the road.

I'll build it for you if you'll pay me to come there.

I'm sure you could drop it down in 4 double-u D and make it out on the other side. If you can't get bigger tires and try again...

Why did they send a survey crew? Those guardrail posts are perfect for alignment;)
I've seen and repaired washouts like that. It does not take much to plug the culvert, after that it is a matter of a few hours and the road gets topped.
