I've seen and repaired washouts like that. It does not take much to plug the culvert, after that it is a matter of a few hours and the road gets topped.

Yes, over 30 years as a heavy equipment operator, mostly as a crane operator...but I've spent my time in dirt iron as well. I've been cussed by the surveyors a time or two for taking out the stakes, batter boards, even benchmarks...

No, I don't mean a couple of hours to fix it, I've seen them wash out only a couple of hours after the culvert gets plugged, in flood season. Stumps and matresses were the culprits.

I spent a couple of summers replacing bridges in locations that looked a lot like that. Bad winter storms took them out, we built new ones...and hopefully BETTER. STRONGER ones...(that were better engineered)

"It'll buff out." is a saying that car guys use after looking at a wreck, no matter if it's just a scratch that can be buffed out or the car is in five pieces. It's like an internet meme that existed long before the internet existed.

Definitely.
Any company I worked for would have back charged to come and reset the benchmarks.

On a side note: Surveying in Canada? What do you do for the frozen half of the year?
