IIRC one analyst got this down a long time ago in 2014: When faced with the threat of increasingly faster commoditization of hardware, the company will say they will be prepared then the ground quickly gives way under their feet.

Sony, Garmin, and everyone else has an action camera now... and I've seen at least one share the mounting screw with GoPros so you can share parts -- pretty clever and asking to be sued.
