I don't know how the patent scene looks... but underwater cameras have been around for a long time. Seems to me it would be easy for a competitor to enter the market (already competing products out) with a camera with better specs, more ruggedness and not burdened by the huge marketing machine gopro has to support. Not saying gopro is a bad product by any means... just seems to me that it is overvalued.

i've had underwater cameras for 10 years. well not the camera, but the housings. the housings themselves aren't cheap either, they all ran me about $150 - $175. they match the canon cameras perfectly. however they are kind of big and bulky. the size of the go pro is what is so nice about it. also i hear the battery life is pretty good. the batteries on my cameras (i've had 4 total cameras that i've used underwater) don't hold up very long when using the camera the whole time.

there are alternatives out there that are cheaper too.

If you were in the market for it's solution you'd find it's the best bang for buck in the market.

Dre Beats ($3 bil)

You do realize that Beats By Dre comprises of 60% of the $99+ headphone market sales, right? That's right! More than Bose, Sennheiser, and every other brand combined. Not to mention, they have a very good licensing deal for streaming music via their service.

I've never understood that. Are they actually good? We've just always used AKG.

I wouldn't call them crap, but there are superior headphones out there for a lesser price. I won a pair of the $300 model (original, not the latest) a couple years ago, and they are fine, but I wouldn't buy them. The noise cancelling works good enough, they have good enough sound quality for me streaming Spotify or Pandora, and the are made pretty well (haven't broken yet). Worth $300 though? Not really. But, Kaep did wear a pair in a commercial!

Interviewed there a little over a year ago for Director level position - meh.

$10B in market cap is awfully lofty for a product that most analysts don't see growing. If I was GoPro I'd diversify and get into the extreme sports movie making biz like Warren Miller did back in the days.

you mentioned Bose and Sennheiser, i will add Sony, AGK, Grados, Audiotechnica

now try that for GoPro

again, i am not debating whether GoPro is worth exactly 10 billion or not, I am saying it deserve some credit for being where it is.

I think GoPro is really overvalued. Beats by Dre had about $1.4 billion in revenue in 2013 and sold for $3 billion to Apple. GoPro had less than a billion in revenue in the same year and is valued at $10 billion. That is entirely what I am arguing.

I think GoPros are great products, they just aren't, as a brand name, worth that much.

Isn't the thing they use to justify it that they are a media company because people can upload to their site? That strikes me as bullshit.

Did you say the same thing about TiVo? Because, I can't name a single "DVR manufacturing", but I am damn sure most people don't have a TiVo.

And, if I had a nephew that was into extreme sports, I most certainly would get him a cheap camcorder and roll of duct tape. I'd tell him to stop being a corporate sellout pussy and do it like the real extreme sports guys did.

Well real humans wore animal skins and lived outside. Not like you corporate pussies. How far does this logic go?

And that piece didn't help TiVo near as much as they hoped. They were worth $60 a share in 2000; they are under $13 a share today and aren't even a name brand anymore. I'd wager that anyone who wasn't at least a teenager in 2000 doesn't know what a TiVo even is. And, IIRC, they lost their patent suit for DVR technology.

It won (there have been several lawsuits). They have won ~$1.6B from their various patent lawsuits as of a year ago, not sure they have had any suits recently.

It's clear he doesn't understand much, I am hoping he is a smart troll; but he is amping up his 'aptitude' base.

there are better options than GoPro, but they own market recognition. Many, many, better options, but whatever.

the same was true of Apple, c. 2003.

Beats products are total diarrhea. It was no surprise to see Apple pick up a product line that is functionally complete garbage, but has a nice finish and good marketing..

I'd never buy one, but GoPro cameras have to be completely sealed and passively cooled while still maintaining high quality. Their competitors don't have quite the same balance of these engineering considerations. Personally, I hate the fisheye effect but Microsoft's new time compression technology the corrects it looks interesting.

I thought the continuing royalties case was overturned on appeals. So, they collected around $1b, but no more will be coming. I could be mistaken though. I thought I remembered something of that sort.

I went mtn biking on Sunday and somebody clipped one of GoPro's competitors to my handle bar for awhile. Still couldn't tell you who made it ;).

A lot of the places where people use Gopro cameras don't get that hot so why is cooling necessary?
