I don't know how the patent scene looks... but underwater cameras have been around for a long time. Seems to me it would be easy for a competitor to enter the market (already competing products out) with a camera with better specs, more ruggedness and not burdened by the huge marketing machine gopro has to support. Not saying gopro is a bad product by any means... just seems to me that it is overvalued.
i've had underwater cameras for 10 years. well not the camera, but the housings. the housings themselves aren't cheap either, they all ran me about $150 - $175. they match the canon cameras perfectly. however they are kind of big and bulky. the size of the go pro is what is so nice about it. also i hear the battery life is pretty good. the batteries on my cameras (i've had 4 total cameras that i've used underwater) don't hold up very long when using the camera the whole time.
there are alternatives out there that are cheaper too.
