And when I think of helmet mounted camera, I think of the 4k panasonics people around here use, not the gopro. I've never even seen a gopro.

Because when I tell you to buy a camera that mounts to a helmet, the first thought in your mind is GoPro and not one of it's competitors. I bet a majority of the population can't even name a GoPro competitor.

Don't know go pros current mounts but back when I purchased you had to mount the camera to you helmet top so it looked like some insect antennas or wear it forward facing on your chest. Bad idea in case you fall (I bought it for skiing). I liked contour mount since it attached to side of helmet on the goggle strap and fit better.

that's my point - you have to RESEARCH to find competitors where if you go up to a random individual and ask "hey, what's the name of that camera that you can mount to stuff?" they're probably going to say GoPro and not Panasonic or Contour.

As an aside, I thought Contour closed it's doors but evidently they're back.

you can't take a camcorder + duct tape with you when you are 50 feet underwater or snowboarding. good luck with your duct tape holding your camcorder onto your bike helmet when you are going down a mountain at 50mph.

gopro makes a lot of things very easy compared to how it used to be to do the same thing.

and you guys just reminded me to search for the gopro 4, and i see they now have it listed on their site. wonder if the timing had anything ot do with the gopro hero 4 coming out.

They are very cool. I've been tempted to get one myself with a helmet mount and handlebar mount for the motorcycle. But it's still a niche product, and I can't imagine a market cap of $11B+ is any way realistic.

i'm hoping i can get one before i go on my scuba trip in december. i was holding off until i went because i knew the 4 was around the corner. so i might get one before, but there are a lot of other bills i gotta pay beforehand so i'm not positive i will get one. i really want to see how the still pictures turn out to be on them, especially when taken underwater. i hear the stills on the previous ones weren't that great.

I don't know how the patent scene looks... but underwater cameras have been around for a long time. Seems to me it would be easy for a competitor to enter the market (already competing products out) with a camera with better specs, more ruggedness and not burdened by the huge marketing machine gopro has to support. Not saying gopro is a bad product by any means... just seems to me that it is overvalued.
