GOP 2004: Michael Moore Draws ...rb, Taunts from Crowd

By Joe Strupp

Published: August 30, 2004

NEW YORK The biggest commotion at the Republican National Convention Monday night occurred just before 10 p.m. with the entrance of filmmaker Michael Moore, who was repeatedly halted by security attempting to reach his reserved press seat in section #340 facing the side of the stage. Moore is writing a daily column this week for USA Today.

Then, after taking his seat, he watched as Senator John McCain referred to a certain "disingenuous film-maker who would have us believe that Saddam's Iraq was an oasis of peace," and seemed to glance at Moore above him. Much of the audience erupted in boos and then, turning to Moore, many delegates chanted "Four more years!"

Moore exclaimed, "Two more months!" He also said, "I can't believe they'd mention the film and help the box office."

A short while later Moore exited, accompanied by heavy security. He told E & P on the way out that he was not fleeing: He had to speak to a Planned Parenthood gathering at a theater uptown.

About this time, his first USA Today column, for Tuesday's edition, appeared online, titled "The GOP Doesn't Reflect America."

Earlier, Moore had received more hassling than usual over press credentials on his way upstairs to his seat. Then it took 20 minutes for him to get from the hallway just outside to the seat, as he was stopped by security two more times.

Informed by a reporter that this was highly unusual, Moore quipped: "How well is YOUR movie doing?"

When he finally reached his seat, so many cameramen gathered that reporters already seated complained that the crush was disturbing their work.

Moore, dressed in his trademark red baseball cap and jeans, told E & P, "I don't why they are checking my credentials so much. I have the right credentials." He added, however, that so far this week "the police have been helpful." and "I have had not negative things said to me by any Republican."

Some Republicans nearby, however, were not shy about sharing their views of Moore with reporters. A GOP consultant from Pennsylvania, David Welch, said, "He's a troublemaker. I think he's here to cause trouble."

"I just want to do some work," Moore said. "This is an important historical event."

Finally seated, he wrote on a notepad, not a laptop, with security guards stationed at each end of his row. Then McCain made his reference and suddenly Republicans were not treating him so nicely.

In his USA Today column, Moore congratulated the Republicans for being able to seize power while only representing one-third of the populace. "Our side is full of wimps who'd rather compromise than fight," he explained. "Not you guys."

Noting that the convention would focus on moderates, Moore charged that Republicans know "that the only way to hold onto power is to pass themselves off as, well, as most Americans. It's a good show."

I liked how he was making a looser sign with his hands while the crowd was booing, he pointed at it with his other hand and mouthed "you" to the crowd - funny how the article left that out  I suppose that is an action he believes the other claimed 2/3rds of the nation would find acceptable in that situation, huh?

Again, why was it left out of the article above? It's usually a gesture reserved for 14 years old girls - could publishing it possibly tarnish the bleeding heart liberal viewpoint of Moore being the next Massiah?

Well, the whole thing shows that, as a Republican, Even the much revered McCain isn't above taking a cheap shot to satisfy the mob...

And also how many folks who've obviously never seen the film will believe what they're told about it, even attempt to speak authoritatively on the subject... McCain likely among them.

And Moore's insight into Republican strategy is incisive- truly run and financed by the far right, as we've seen in the wake of 9/11, they attempt to pass themselves off as something else by putting their most moderate members on the stage. Where's Tom DeLay, Grover Norquist, and the rest of the apparatchiks who really run the show? Hiding behind the skirts of 9/11 widows?

Looks like a terrar-9/11- evil Saddam- God's on our side- wave the flag and vote for me 'cause I'm tough televangelist lovefest... with a bunch of chumps drooling on their couches, mesmerized by the obvious propaganda... ready to go out and kill for jebus...

They should project Fahrenheit 9/11 on the sides of buildings there. They should let everyone in the area see the movie for themselves.

Oh, and the Democratic Convention was honest as they pretended to be the Strong Military Party (when they nominated a proven liar, phony war hero) and didn't admit their plans to turn America into a subserviant colony of France and the UN? Puh-leeze...

You guys are insane, full of hate and rage and a danger to the safety of freedom loving people everywhere.

Nice how the liberal-fascist-Democrats treat dissent around here. They get away with baseless ad hominems and call anyone who points out their lies "trolls".

My bad for thinking that P&N was anything other than the "Liberal-Fascist-Democrat Circle-Jerk Forum" where America-hating Michael Moore fans can get together to express their contempt for freedom and diversity as the bleat their pitiful cries for power and revenge.

<yawn>

There's a Real World out there. And it's likely to crush your lying, phony war hero on Nov. 2. Get the cyanide pills ready.

I guess you are right, I'm still happy to know of at least two threads on the forum that are completely troll and flame free and yet still manages to hold a civil discussion on the subject :D

Moore may cost Bush more votes than anybody else which makes him a person of note and somebody many will either love or hate.

Wow. Use of the "neo-con" shibboleth AND some good old-fashioned anti-Semitism. The irony overwhelms the senses. And you guys call non-Democrats Nazis?!?!?

Where have I said that I support the Administration, the GOP or am voting for Bush.

News flash: I'm not. Other than the feeble tax cut and recognizing that the world's a dangerous place and continuance of the liberal-fascist-Democrats policy of living on our knees and hoping that appeasing the wolves will keep the slaughter at a minimum was suicide for the nation, I've had little use for anything these guys have done and am truly offended at the cynical realpoliticking that drives their behavior.

That said, Democrats are traitors and Kerry is the liar, which explains why you tools shriek "LIES AND SMEARS" to distract from the sorry record of treason your side has.

Kerry lied. POWs died.

Suck it up.

How is that bigotry? Im only stating Dems rely on those two groups, and would lose almost every election without them.

So quick with the labeling, your conditioned for instant reaction to a threat against the Liberals safe haven of easy votes.

Get over yourself. There was no "racism" in his post. Once again, just another knee-jerk accusation by the left over mentioning "minorities".

Interesting that Dems are referred to as fascists, when it's the other side who supports indefinite imprisonment without charge, and flaunt the constitution and longstanding legal practice to do so...

Also pertinent that the original fascist, Mussolini, defined Fascism as the merger of State and Corporate power. Anybody notice who it is that the corporate interests are supporting this election? Mergers, after all, are generally mutually beneficial, and agreed upon beforehand- it seems clear that the Repubs are offering a really nice package...

So white people are thoughtful and rational, minorities are "blindly loyal," and that's not a bigoted statement? You're not being honest with yourself, much less anyone else.

You could accurately have observed that most black people vote Democratic (I believe they are actually the only minority group that does so consistently, actually), but instead you used the phrase "blindly loyal." By way of illustration, how would you feel if someone said your wife was "blindly loyal" to you?

Putting words in my mouth?

I did not say any race was more/less thoughtfull than any other race, im the last person anyone would call a racist. But as far as voting, look at the numbers, the two most loyal interest groups in america are Unions and Minorities, its just a fact, I am being "honest with myself" Being blind for reasons of PC or the outright fear of just the word "minority" keeps you from being honest with yourself. Please note that I was also referring to Unions, which yes, transcend racial lines.

Dems use the "shut up its not PC" argument way too often.
