The R insiders HATE Cruz but have decided to back him. Trump has always been an opportunist and I have to confess my impression of him is that he's a lot smarter than I long thought. The idea of Trump as president is scary, but nothing scares me more than the mere thought of Cruz as commander and chief -- sociopath in chief. Kind of like having Ted Bundy with his finger on the big red button.

The reason Trump is doing well, is the same reason that Bernie is doing so well.

Sometimes candidates come to the forefront (just like Obama did) that spark certain individuals who would otherwise never take the time out of their day to vote, to actually do so. Bernie and Trump both speak with a message that attracts certain individuals.

Bernie just happens to speak to young liberal intellectuals, while Trump is pulling in all the racist reality tv watching mouth breathers. I haven't heard a single liberal yet say they were casting their vote to try to get Trump to win the primary. That is stupid. The race between Bernie and Hillary is too close to waste that vote.

With an establishment candidate all but the super rich will get screwed. With Trump however, we'd all be screwed. A Vote for Trump is a vote for "If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me!".

As I said, Trump sweeps in open primaries and bombs in closed primaries and caucus states, only an idiot (like you) would think there's nothing to that. :\

I don't think it reasonable to assume all those voters are Dems up to shenanigans.

IIRC roughly only half usually vote in elections and an awful lot of people are now registered as independent.

With such huge turnout certainly some are new voters and others are registered as independent who are leaning towards voting repub this time.

That's probably true, however, long before the meme about Cruz being the Zodiac I had the uncomfortable feeling that he was/is a sociopath. The mere thought of him with his finger on the button should terrify every sentient being.

Cruz has zero chance of winning in the general election. This is why they are backing him. They are throwing the game, and to them Hillary is a better choice vs trump. They are actually scared that trump actually has a chance of winning

I think they're scared of not having dominance in a single branch of government, which could very well happen if Trump is the nom.

Umm, the polls I've seen show the race slightly closer for Clinton v Cruz than Clinton v Trump.

All the reason why Trump is the only choice, anyone whose the establishment vouch for CANNOT be good for the people.
What a ridiculous line of thought. You mean people with actual job experience are bad for the people? Are you insane? I was always told that hookers are the only profession where the highest rates were given to those with the least experience. I suspect politicians are held in the same regard, but I certainly don't want a neophyte conducting foreign policy.

And we've all seen what handing the power to a bunch of nubs gives you: completely broken government that can't even accomplish the most basic of functions, like you know, pass a budget, nominate (and approve) supreme court justices (or even federal court justices for fuck's sake), not undermine each other on foreign policy (see the repub's letter to Iran). So on and so forth.

Part of the problem with the Repubs in Congress is that the only things that they can offer their constituents is the same crap that Bush and Cheney shoveled out by the ton after ton until it, for all practical purposes, broke the bank.

It seems to me a large portion of their loyal constituency would like very much to avoid that epic debacle again, and they just so happen to NOT be the very rich that would very much like to relive those eight years again when they, and ONLY they became oh so much richer and powerful.

So now that many of their "not rich" members have wised up and have proclaimed that "fool me once...." ditty as their own, their leadership in Congress and the GOP heads of state have realized that they can't fool many of their working class party members into buying another eight years of the infamous Bush/Cheney Corp. "No Liability" leadership.......again.

These slick party leaders have nowhere to go and nothing else to offer except "Benghazi!!!" or "E-mails!!!" or "Commie Gay Marriage Abortionists!!! or just anything, ANYTHING to distract away from their voting base that their ideology is one that expects and demands that their middle class and their poor must forever make sacrifices so that their leaders can continue to live their lives in luxury and obscene excess.

There is literally no one worth voting for on the R side...

Nor on the D side.

Seriously. We have the worst fielding of candidates I've ever seen in a Presidential Election. We need a Prime Minister and get rid of this ridiculous election process.

Why do you think that would fix it at all? In most cases, a prime minister does not enter office through a direct election. They are appointed by the legislature or through another governmental office. So where would that leave us? A prime minster appointed by Congress? LOL.

What a ridiculous line of thought. You mean people with actual job experience are bad for the people? Are you insane? Exactly. The line of thought that we only need inexperienced outsiders for both heading federal agencies or running for elected offices was always somewhat puzzling to me. What's wrong with having an expert - someone good at running the government or writing legislation (etc) - be in office? It's a complicated machine.

Sure, there might be some that don't give a crap about their constituents and only look to extend their own authority, but I'm not cynical enough to believe that all or even most of them are that way.

I think republican establishments are backing Cruz knowing he is the failure candidate. I wonder if they are looking at a 4-6 year plan for an establishment resurgence and conceding to 4 years of hilary, hoping that Hilary will be insanely unpopular for those 4 years making it simple to run as a republican.

It's not because they're new but rather because they're assholes who'll break the govt if they can't run it according to their radical agenda. They've been such jerks about it that they forced Boehner's resignation as the only way to back away from their taking the party & almost the Nation hostage over funding PP. They're extortionists.

Such is the power that Repubs have allowed to 50 HOR extremists whose ultra safe districts they basically gerrymandered into existence. They promoted & advanced the Teahad headset unreservedly, until... it's come full circle to bite 'em right in the ass.

Conservatives? Republicans? You built this, guys, so, uhh, enjoy.

It's not even nearly that complicated. Their ideology states that government doesn't work, so when they get control they proceed to break it and then use that as evidence that government doesn't work. Wash Rinse Repeat. It's tragic.
