I read that to mean that Google is going to have text ads on the email page itself, not send you email's about it. If I do a search for "Metallica Tickets" now, I get all the sponserd links to ticket brokers. If my buddy sends me an email saying "Dude, I got us two metallica tickets for the show on the 23rd", I'd probably see the same text ads on the page either to the side or above/below the messege.

I've never really found the ads to be intrusive (sometimes amusing, I've done searches for analytical lab service and got ads for Ebay), so I can see this working.

My only real worry is that Google ends up like Yahoo. Yahoo was GREAT back when it was young, then they gradually added services until they were forced to start using intrusive ads that got annoying. It's still useful to some extent, but I'd rather use popup/flash free google any day

The article intimated that they may charge for "additional" services like spam protection. If that's the case, I will stay with Yahoo. They have fabulous spam protection, and the account is free. The extra space is not worth the lack of features.
Yahoo Mail has anything but fabulous spam protection. I get 300 spam mail a day. Hotmail is much improved... I get less than 10 a day. It's quite amazing, considering it used to be the opposite way around. Yahoo has gone so far downhill for me.

I get average 2-3 a day now that pass through the filters. The rest gets deposited into bulk mail folder which is a single click empty.
Ahh I see. If that's the case, I would get very little spam through the filters also. I've tried using the bulk mail folder but the fact that I have to go in and check/empty it makes it useless to separate from the regular emails (I use POP to check it - and that categorizes it for me - but 300 takes a long time to "download"). The reason Hotmail is better is because the spam never even reaches you or any bulk mail folder. They actually keep it away.

I would think the word 'carpet' would cause a pron pop-up ad :D

If this is a joke, it will be the best of all time, beating out the radio broadcast of the war of the worlds.

According to this, it's not a joke

Actually, now that I think about it, it makes sense. They can offer 1GB of space because a vast majority of users will probably never need anywhere close to that amount of storage space. Plus, they will probably have limits on the size of the messages that you can send, so there won't be any 200-mb emails. I imagine they'll probably monitor high-volume accounts to check for spammers and suspicious activity.

For those who are bashing Yahoo, just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.

I have several free Yahoo accounts and I've been very happy with them.
I like the fact that I can get to them from anywhere and I think they have a great interface. I like it better than Outlook.

One of my Yahoo accounts gets probably 60-70 spam emails a day. Most days, 100% of those are caught and put in my bulk mail folder. I probably get one or two each week that actually make it into my inbox.

Are all you naysayers ready to step up and take your trout slapping like men?

About Gmail on google site.

Info below is in newspaper article today and quotes Larry Page, Google co-founder.

It's going to have text-based ads like the ones that appear on the right side of the page in searches.

Offers 1GB storage space and you can send up to 10MB in one email.

There will be keyword search of email.

It expects to make the service available to all within a few weeks and you can provide an email address at the link above for them to tell you when it happens.

Google has been testing this internally for about a year.

Complete article here.

Ha, ha... ads based on the contents of my e-mails? I write e-mails in four different languages, good luck trying to keep up with that!

Anybody else using this yet? I have an account but it's hard to test this out unless I use this as my primary email address.
You are currently using 0 MB (0%) of your 1000 MB.
haha.. guess they weren't kidding :p
