A free google account sounds even better.

You ought to be fired for that you dumbass

??? What's wrong with Yahoo? I've had a free account with them forever and I needed more space so I paid to upgrade. Nothing wrong with that if I like their service. It's reliable and I can access it from anywhere including my PDA.

That's like admitting you pay for Hotmail.

Edit: As an AT employee, you should know better.

Known better than to pay for a service that I like? That's like saying that I shouldn't buy a Toyota b/c a Kia will get the job done for less money.

But why don't you use the Anandtech mail, or your own domain's mail for the same price (or cheaper)? Why buy the Toyota when you can get the exact same one for free?

Maybe the fact you can get a cheap or free (1and1.com) hosting account that will do the same thing for MUCH less. You can access pop anywhere you can use outlook express or similar free email client (pegasus). I *think* lots of pda's and phones also have pop acess too, but not sure since I haven't checked email on my phone in a year.

It'll do full text searching of e-mail with a webmail interface? No need to ever download messages off the server, excluding messages with (really) large attachments?

Our Anandtech email accounts are spammed to death with bogus email. 95% of what we get on our accounts is spam.

Bottom line, I don't mind paying for a service that I LIKE, that I've had excellent reliablility with, and that I know is always in service. I like the peace of mind, and $30 isn't gonna kill me.

You guys act like $30 a year is gonna break someone. You guys need to get out more and stop arguing over something so trivial that doesn't even affect you;)

I am unemployed. $30 is a lot to me at the moment. Get me a job and I will stop.

I pay $30 or whatever a year for my Yahoo email, too. I don't mind paying for it at all. It's reliable and decent.

Knock it off... Yahoo is great for free, and the paid options are well worth the cost if you need them.

I do agree that often webspace is the best deal. For $75 a year or less you can get your own domain, and 100-350MB of storage space for all those forum images and spam emails. You have the option of POP or webmail access too. Some people simply don't want to pay that much, however.

Yahoo Mail has anything but fabulous spam protection. I get 300 spam mail a day. Hotmail is much improved... I get less than 10 a day. It's quite amazing, considering it used to be the opposite way around. Yahoo has gone so far downhill for me.

Yea, I've had my hotmail account for almost 5 years now and I still only get about 10 per week. ALthough, I do regularlly purge the junk mail list and start over every 4-6 months.
