I had a DejaNews email account before it was google.

You have a google-email account?

No, There used to be a site called DejaNews that was web based means of searching and posting to USENET.

They also offered a free email account.

Google took them over at Google's inseption and this gave Google a widespread user base.

DejaNews is long gone. :(

Yahoo Mail has anything but fabulous spam protection. I get 300 spam mail a day. Hotmail is much improved... I get less than 10 a day. It's quite amazing, considering it used to be the opposite way around. Yahoo has gone so far downhill for me.

I get average 2-3 a day now that pass through the filters. The rest gets deposited into bulk mail folder which is a single click empty.

OIC! Well, hopefully this turns out to be real news, and not an 4/1 joke.

Everyone fell for google's deception.

Of course it is an april fools prank. Say 1,000,000 people signed up, that would mean 1,000,000 gigs, which would be impossible.

Google IS the internet. Google is becoming synonymous with the internet. They got reuters and cnn and whoever else to play along, but it is all one big April Fools joke.

Now they have everyone's attention, so when Gmail really does come out, everyone will know about it and it will overtake the internet's leading free e-mail provider as well (hotmail).

Very smart move by google, and you all fell for it.

No surprise - someone who pays $25 a month (!!!!!!!) for a POP3 access will be glad to pay for SPAM google mail too :)

Btw. i have a free POP3 provider....i know they're rare - but they exist...

And you pay more for your email than i pay for my whole internet :)

And yes..Gmail is no april joke - actually its old news......glad i dont need it.

PS Please dont ask me for the free POP3 provider - i think you can only sign up for it if you live in a certain european state anyway.
You can however try google searches and there might be SOME comingup which also allow POP3..AFAIK..... !

Edit: Dont know about whether the 1gig is a joke...anyway its irrelevant for POP3 since all the stuff ends up on the local HD anyway....thats the IDEA behind POP3 ;)
The 'storage' is only relevant for NON Pop3 webinterfaces...and every serious user PROBABLY uses POP3/Outlook...so who gives a **** about their email-storage ??

They probably need one Gig for all that Spam crap :) Every user one Gig of Spam and Ads, and a few emails in addition...YAY ...OH LORD.... .

no, you are wrong. I can access my POP3 from everywhere. And in addition they also have a web interface wich i can access from everywhere in case i dont have POP3., eg. at work.
The catch here is only that to *sign up* you have to reside in EU...you cannot sign up and give an address that you live in the staes. (AFAIK!)
And mine is free too. They only want money for additional storage and certain other features i dont need. (Never needed it tho)

Edit: "April FOOL ?"

I dont know (the 1 gig part)...if yes....google's sense for humor seems to have hit rock bottom...what's the funny thing about it ?
I know that the mail thing is NOT a joke, neither is the 'targeted' email spam ....they were talking about this for some time already.

And i am very much *against* spam and everything related...therefore i do not support the google email thing at all....and as i said earlier 1 Gig a joke or not, noone cares because its irrelevant IMHO....and yes, 1 gig seems also unrealistic :)

Assuming Yahoo has 5Million members @ 100MB for $50/year

For yahoo, that is 500Million MB, or 500 Terabytes of Information at a Net Profit of 250Million Per year.

Assuming Google has 5Million members @ 1000MB for $30/year

For Google, that is 5 Billion MB, or 5 Petabytes of Information at a Net Profit of 150Million Per year.

NO WAY IN HELL GOogle would undercut itself by a storage margin 10x as high yet $20 cheaper.

Even if people used 100MB of their available capaity, that is still an astonishing 500Terabytes.

JUST IMAGINE BACKING IT UP :Q

I think it more has to do with smarts and sense, than with education.'

But yeah, google just owned 98% of you.

From CNN news story on this:

"To finance the service, Google will display advertising links tied to the topics discussed within the e-mails. For instance, an e-mail inquiring about an upcoming concert might include an ad from a ticket agency."

Google is going to search your email and send you ads that relate to stuff in it. :Q Could prove embarrassing or worse. Ever send jokes? They see " My mother taught me religion - 'you'd better pray that comes out of the carpet.' " Doed that result in ads for religious items and carpet cleaning?
