Everyone fell for google's deception.
Of course it is an april fools prank. Say 1,000,000 people signed up, that would mean 1,000,000 gigs, which would be impossible.
Google IS the internet. Google is becoming synonymous with the internet. They got reuters and cnn and whoever else to play along, but it is all one big April Fools joke.
Now they have everyone's attention, so when Gmail really does come out, everyone will know about it and it will overtake the internet's leading free e-mail provider as well (hotmail).
Very smart move by google, and you all fell for it.

Google uses inexpensive clusters of regular IDE drives, it doesn't cost them squat. The ad revenue will be extremely lucrative.Originally posted by: Shockwave
Warcrow = teh dumbness.
I said it wont fly for LONG. You know why? Assume an average of 15 million users. Now figure out how much storage space Google would need to maintain those accounts with the 1 gig their going to be allowing per account.
You think Google is gonna offer that for free? Not very damned long.

I know the peeps @ google. When google was a startup they were in the cage next to ours at exodus. Their clusters were packed so tight it caused a 12 degree increase in our cage temperature. The hard drives were sticky taped to the top of the motherboards, they were so heavy it made them bend. The a/c wasn't ducted right so exodus wound up cutting a giant hole in the wall and used an external a/c from a big rig.
If you were a terrorist you could have just climbed in the tubing and landed in our area.![]()
