I hate UI changes... ugh.

They changed the gmail chat window too and it's fucking terrible.

I think they are running it for today only to gauge feedback. If people like it, it may stick.

Got to admit, it's grown on me. Especially random.

if you don't want the background image, use the https* version for today. so far, it has not been rolled out to there yet.

and regarding those images, one in particular, the two pigs -- i'm sure the image itself is nice and all but what a fcking disaster when seen with the other google homepage elements. D:

I think the ironic part about google is that it almost seems they were trying to figure out how much they have to fuck up their homepage before people would stop going to it. If this doesn't do it, then I guess they've got work to do!

The fade-in is the killer. That is some shitty JavaScript for you. No wonder Google is always going on about JS performance in Chrome. With code like that you need a fast JS engine.

How should i know its for a day? So now I have to actually read everything thats on the page too... buzzoff man

Also, that's exactly how the sidebar thing on the search result page started, one day trial, my flat brown ass...

Don't deny it. You'll be back too in no time.

I was thinking the same thing.

I cannot remember the last time I went to google.com.

MotionMan

Its not that... when I need a search I use the search window. But goggle is more than just search, it is/was my home page. Open FF and you get google.com, I click on news, maps, gmail, whatever I needed. Also I go to the website when my search string has more than a couple of words as I don't get to see the whole predictive search suggestion... And now open FF I get this ridiculous looking gaudy page...

maybe they should add some more stuff? Like a clock, some news headings, few RSS feeds. Its not like the simple clean interface was one of the reasons they became so popular or anything

If you click "Change Background Image" on the lower left, then select "Editors Picks", and scroll to the bottom, you can set it to a plain white or colored background. Not quite as good as removing the fucking thing, but not bad.

I really don't understand the logic though.
When they did the whole fade-in crap with the links, the explanation I read was that they wanted to make the page simple and focused on the search box since that's what 90% of people do on the google homepage. So how in the hell is adding a background image contributing to making the page simple and focused? It's the complete opposite.

I'm not opposed to them adding features like this. But give the users a choice. Let us control whether or not we want a background image or links that fade in, in our account preferences.

I'm blocking the background image with AdBlock Plus.

Code:

Where can we give our input?

I really don't like these background images. I wished they gave me the option to disable it permenantly.

Must have gotten a lot of complaints because it's back to regular Google for me.
same here. i'm glad someone came to their senses before tech support around the world got flooded with calls from old coots asking WTF happened to their home web port hole.

All browsers have a Google search window now don't they?
Why do you need to go to Google.com?

i changed mine to default to the wowhead search engine, its customizable for any number of engines, not just google.

and i use bing and google both, no real favor to either of them. i do use bing on my phone more tho, since im using live search (havent updated it to the bing one yet)

not back to normal for me here... still has a semi-slow-loading background.

Yep, thankfully mine is back to normal. Now if only there was a way to disable the fade in.
