Google was a search engine LONG before Bing came to be...therefore, Bing ripped Google off first.
:p

They're fucking search engines. Who gives a flying fuck what the interface LOOKS like as long as they provide the desired results?

fanbois...

seriously, this.

As far as access to this BG image:

Logged into Google, and even logged out (and then logged back in)
Firefox: Nope
Chrome: nope
even IE8: Nope

(Windows 7)

Not that I care.
I rarely, rarely, go to google.com. Just no need. I google all the time but never use the main page.

Chrome, the bar is easy search.
Ctrl-T, type search (cursor automatically in the address bar), enter

Firefox:
My default main session browser, Firefox, customized a bit (has a super awesome bar, by means of the add-on OmniBar), allows easy search of all main search engines and other places through the address bar.

Ctrl-T
Cursor is in address bar, type search string, enter. Voila.
(can also, in the address bar, type "@w" and the following string is searched at wiki. the @"x" method changes the search engine, like the search engine could be swapped in the default search bar in Firefox)

Also, another movement using mouse: type in address bar, center-click on the Enter/Go button.

As mentioned earlier, in Firefox, ctrl-k moves cursor to address bar.
Ctrl-k address bar, type search string, then Ctrl-Enter also loads search in new tab. Ctrl-k, search string, Enter, loads search in the same window.

Amazingly enough even in the private sector there are still old apps out there that just don't work with some modern browsers.

Most that play the compabality card are still using ie6. DoS just this week went to IE7. So it seems if you use IE you would either use 6 or 8. 7's big problem was compabality and ie8 was supposed to fix a lot of those problems. So that is why Fed Gov was my first thought for IE7.

Interestingly enough I suddenly saw the background picture myself using Chromium under Ubuntu 10.4.

A good idea is a good idea.

This obsession with who came up with what idea first always puzzles me.

People spend their energy on this obsession because they want other people to recognize that the person who came up with the good idea is superior in some way to their competition/rivals.

They're basically saying: "Look! Microsoft first came up with the idea to let the user choose the background in Bing! Google later allows its users to do the same thing. Therefore, Microsoft has talented and forward-thinking people while Google is a bunch of unoriginal losers who can't come up with their own ideas."

I see the background image and I'm using WinXP SP3 and IE8.

OMG, now Google by default has a background image, I did not choose it, neither was i logged it. When is too far too far? This to too far, this is the height of copying. OK, I give up, I have changed by homepage to Bing now. If I want crap I will get it from ppl who invented it.

The most attractive thing about Google evar, which gave it its initial popularity was the simplicity of its home page, its gone now... all is lost... forever... end of an ear...

I hope there is an option to disable it while not signed in.

Just googled "damn google background" and it looks like quite a few are pissed.

I've had Google as my homepage since almost day 1, I'm a big fan of the fast loading, simple white screen. The doodles have been annoying me (PacMan was cute-once). I spent about fifteen minutes on my home computer trying to restore the white screen and muttering curses at my son, who I suspected of doing this damage until I found out it came from Google, apparently as a one-day deal.

I'm switching all my home pages to Bing. Goodbye Google. I don't care for Bing but like this travesty less.

BTW on the two computers I've used so far I had different pictures than the sand dune-but both were uglier.

bing does better than google: aerial view maps.

don't care which search engine is better. Use the built in search bar at the top of your browser and you won't have to see any background or go to a search engine page to begin with.

Isn't this just for one day? Switching to bing because of a 1 day trial background?

Really?

Also, that's exactly how the sidebar thing on the search result page started, one day trial, my flat brown ass...
