No, I don't think this needs a poll. What it needs is honesty and insight ... IMO. :D

At the least it's good exercise.

Ask yourself this:

What do all the world's best athletes do when the retire? Answer: Golf :)

I love to play golf.

I'm fucking terrible and my clubs are older than I am, but nothing is better than strolling around on a nice day, knocking the shit out of a ball.

Yeah, well, I think Mark Twain said "golf is a good walk spoiled." He was probably pretty awful at golf, of course.

And I think a lot, maybe the majority, take it up before they retire. It appeals to the athlete in them and it's usually much less injurious (however as Tiger has shown, not necessarily).

Most boring game ever invented. Likewise, 8 foot tall basketball players ruin the sport. I think they should max out the basketball players to 6 foot tall. Then it becomes a sport with talent. How much talent is there in an 8 foot tall player dropping a ball in the basket? The height of the basket should be proportionate to the height of the players. Sports have not changed much in many years. We need to add some flavor!

For me, it's a chance to have some "dude time" with friends or quality time with the kids. I enjoy the challenge, but it's not something I'll ever take very seriously. Skip the cart, and it's even a decent amount of exercise.

Path to enlightenment. Right near the start of the path though.

Once you realize golf is a waste of time, you are ready to put it behind you and take the next step along the path.

It is a fun game and it kills the better part of a whole day. Good to be out in the nice weather too. And I love it when I hit it just right and the ball takes off for a nice long flight. But, it is costly for equipment and greens fees.

I've only gone to the driving range a couple of times, never played an actual round of golf. My wife says she is happy that I don't play. Apparently a couple of her friends have husbands that golf each weekend and it pisses them off.

I love golf. I'm 26 and just started playing in the last year. I'm not very good but trying to get better and find the intricacies of the sport fascinating. The difference between hitting a fantastic shot and an awful shot is so small.... yet so large. It's been really fun learning how every part of your swing affects the actual shot.

My dad is addicted to golf. Played it since he was 14, will be 60 later this year. Eats, sleeps, breaths it. When he's not playing, he's watching it on TV or reading about it online. For me, I find it incredibly boring. You chase a ball with a stick, yet somehow there seems to be an awful lot of rules for that.

Wow, I'm with you and don't know how hardcore golfers (who don't play to make a living) find as much interest in it as they do. More power to your father and people like him, but I'm at a loss at why people treasure it so. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the driving range, putt-putt, and golf on my PC/PSP is probably my favorite game in the genre, but I don't have much patience to walk 18 holes, I don't like bugs, I don't particularly like to socialize while playing something like that because I'm trying to concentrate.

It's stupid as hell, but I might just be saying that because I spent a buttload on new clubs a few weeks ago and had a terrible week at the range.

Watching golf is, seriously, the worst thing ever. My brother did nothing but watch the TV guys gush over Rory all of Saturday and Sunday and absolutely nothing exciting happened. Shoot me now.

I'm kind of neutral. I like to play, I like to spend the time in the sun, but it's not an obsession or anything. I have many other hobbies that are equally fun.

Golf is a married mans game. I've been to a few different courses now and I would much rather spend my Saturday drinking alcohol with women in the sun, opposed to playing with sticks, balls and old dudes. Maybe 10% of the people there were female, including employees, married women, and ugly married women.

Path to enlightenment. Golf is one of the hardest games to do well which is why you see so many world-class athletes who suck at it. Improvement takes effort and there are no shortcuts.

I'd rather wander around without carrying a bunch of shit and trying to smash a little ball into a little hole a million miles away.

One of, if not the only, unmasterable sport. For those with even a sliver of competitiveness in them, the alure is too great.

I used to play a lot of golf, but it was usually corporate or charity tournament events. It consisted of arriving at the club at 11 - 11:30am to check in and have a burger before a shoot gun start at 1:00pm (all groups start at the same time, on different holes). Because of the number of foursomes on the course, it was often 6:30 or 7:00 before we finished, then there would be a buffet dinner, followed by prize handouts and sometimes a charity auction. Often we wouldn't get out of there before midnight.

After 6 or 7 of these events each summer for ten years I got so tired of 12 - 13 hour events that I simply stopped going. I still donate to the charity by sponsoring a hole or providing a prize, I just don't attend.

Now when I do play golf, I want it to be with a few friends and have the fun over 4-5 hours.
