God did NOT create the Universe, says Stephen Hawking

The universe was not created by God, scientist Stephen Hawking has said in his new book.

Professor Hawking believes the laws of physics were behind the Big Bang instead, in a challenge to traditional religious beliefs.

In The Grand Design, extracts of which were printed today, Prof Hawking concludes: 'Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing.

'Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.

'It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.'

The book, co-written by American physicist Leonard Mlodinow and published on September 9, sets out to contest Sir Isaac Newton's belief that the universe must have been designed by God as it could not have created out of chaos.

He cites the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting a star other than our Sun.

'That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions - the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass - far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings.'

Proving the universe created itself from nothing is just about the same difficulty as proving God did it.

You can't do either.

Also: that's not what the book is about, and he doesn't say "God didn't create the universe".

This thread is now about Cookies.

Sometimes, I feel like this Analog guy and William Gjates are the same person.

Clearly that picture has everything to do with the actual topic at hand.

I'll take my self creating universe now, thanks. Wait, you don't have one?

If it's not observable and not testable, it is NOT science, it is philosophy or religion.

If there was a god, and i am sure there is not,

Why doesnt he remove disease?
Heal the sick?
Feed the hungry?

If he is real he is a fucking hypocrypte.

population control. also, i believe the word you were looking for was hypocrite. also, if you read the bible (and i haven't in quite a long time so i might be wrong) but i think he sent his son to earth to do all of that, and we killed him for it. not saying i believe it, just saying.

You believe a fictional novel written 500years after this Jesus guy died.

Thinking about it more, I really don't follow his logic at all.

My analogy would be a computer program. The software we see running didn't write itself. It was born on the compile, much like the universe was born at the big bang. But the laws that govern the piece of software were written by a programmer. Much like the laws of the universe.

I'm not saying I believe in heaven/hell, etc.., which I really don't. I consider myself an agnostic, but I see his logic as being flawed. Unless this article was taken out of context or something.

He offers no explanation as to where the laws of physics might have come from to begin with.

Where did he say he was going to do these things. Please tell us.

Hawking also said that Hostile Aliens were coming to get us. Pffft!

Because a perfect world would be really stupid and meaningless.

A world with an unlimited amount of challenges for us to overcome... now that's something.

Yea but saying some magic diety did it is just admitting you give up and believe anything.

Humans have had hundreds of deities in our short history. Yet when one falls another one is made up. Look how dumb scientology looks today due to its young age. Yet if christianity was the same age it would look just as dumb.

I agree with that. I'm just saying his logic is completely flawed and he really hasn't added anything to the puzzle.
