Proving the universe created itself from nothing is just about the same difficulty as proving God did it.

You can't do either.

Also: that's not what the book is about, and he doesn't say "God didn't create the universe".

The universe was not "created." It's not some big magic thing that was all the sudden created and static.
The universe formed through the laws of physics. It's constantly changing and evolving. It's anything but a static creation.
There is a good amount of evidence to support this, it's not just some guy making shit up because he thinks he's special. (we call that "religion")

This. I don't think he said "God did not create the universe", I think the point was that he didn't believe God was necessary for things to play out the way they (apparently) did, that everything that happened is neatly worked in the laws of physics. He doesn't explain who created the laws of physics in the first place, kind of saying "they just are", which sounds very much like a religious explanation of who created God -- he just is and has always been.

Yep, and Hawkings is actually agnostic IIRC.

Clearly that picture has everything to do with the actual topic at hand.

I'll take my self creating universe now, thanks. Wait, you don't have one?

If it's not observable and not testable, it is NOT science, it is philosophy or religion.

The big bang is observable. We can observe it whenever we want.

If there is a God, and he did create everything, and intended for humans to have the intelligence that we do, then he would probably be pretty irritated that we didn't use our logical skills to deduce that he doesn't exist. Thus, those who rely on faith (acceptance of something when there is zero evidence) will be denied entry into heaven, while those who doubted his existence will pass right into Heaven.

that's an interesting angle. Why would god give us free will and logical thought, yet restrict us from applying such skills when approaching theology?
:hmm:

what an ass.

When are humans going to stop discussing the unknown and unprovable (and worse yet, treat it as if it is known) and start learning what IS known? There are so many people out there that haven't a clue about even basic physics and math it's appalling to see them waste time arguing over something that cannot be proven.

Laws of any kind seems to give order over chaos.

Which makes sense since that is exactly what life is.

I just find it hard to believe that some all-powerful/supposedly 'loving' God would allow me to sit here on the internet chatting with you fine fellows while stuffing my face with a $5 footlong I got from Subway a few minutes ago. At the same time some 9 year old girl is starving in Africa and hiding out hoping that she doesn't get gang raped by militants wielding machetes and throwaway automatic weapons while she's out trying to pick berries or some shit just so she doesnt die from starvation like her older brother who was taking care of her after her parents were murdered by the dudes with machetes when she was 4.

At least that's how I feel about it.

Well remember Jesus was only given to Jews and later adopted by Whites.

The Blacks are only there for being slaves.

That is until the damn liberals with their brains decided that was a bad thing.

Lol classy reference!! :whiste:

Where did he say he was going to do these things. Please tell us.

Hawking also said that Hostile Aliens were coming to get us. Pffft!

I'd believe in a hostile alien race before I'd believe in a magic being that creates shit for no reason.

Meh, I'd believe Stephen Hawking before I'd believe a bunch of religious kooks.

Y lol?

first link with google:

http://www.greenmuze.com/blogs/eco-geek/1119-observing-the-big-bang.html

think about it. How would we know about the Big Bang if we hadn't first observed it? Same goes for evolution. We can and constantly do observe these things.

I'd say your scope is limited as to how science defines "observe," but you're usually on the science side of these arguments...so I'll just sit here and :\

I thought you meant Big Bang sexually. Sorry, I'm always foremost on the sexual side of all arguments. That's how male brains work I guess lol.

One side says LAWS OF PHYSICS
Other side says God

and they both throw each of those things around as how the universe came into existence. Why can't in a sense God = Laws of Physics?

I think in this sense the way that people speak about it it is.. due to god the universe came into existence" no no "it's because of gravity...the laws of physics." I think on some level its kind of very similar if not the same thing.

The only difference in between the two is that the laws of physics don't make you worship them and god does, but neither seems to be affected by our worship or discovery (or lack of), the benefit or not benefit seems only for us.

If we stop discussing the unknown, then we as a species have failed.
What the hell is the "unprovable"? Are you refering to things that we will be able to prove once we know more? Or are there somethings that you believe to be completely unprovable. And if so, how come you have this knowledge and nobody else does?

Humanity is curious and wants to know how things work. The way to do that is through scientific discovery/exploration. You do bring up that there are a lot of people who are ignorant and/or stupid. The ignorant and stupid should educate themselves. It's called personal responsibility.
