GM is no more

Bought by Chysler which is a private company.

Do you actually enjoy not knowing anything about what you're talking about? GM would be acquiring Chrysler if anything did happen. GM would be giving up their remaing 49% stake in GMAC to Cerberus for Chrysler but Cerberus would like to still keep a small stake in Chrysler. Where the hell are you reading Chrysler overtaking GM?

up 33% if anyone bought at $4 (early Friday). I say it gets up to $8-9.

I picked up 500 shares @ 5.20 betting a friend I'd double my cash in a week. He didn't buy, so we will see :)

If you would have sold this morning when hit breifly hit 7.50, you would have made about $1000 :)

lol you think prius is profitable and/or is even close to a meaningful contribution to toyota's total revenue base?

I live in TX and I see a prius almost every time I am out. This is in Dallas and Austin.

Toyota sells almost 10 million cars a year. The prius is almost around 1 million since 1997. Prius is a flake on Toyota's income statement.

I agree direct contribution of Prius on the balance sheet is minimal, chances are the line is operating in the red. However the marketing value derived from it is what pushed them above GM.

I disagree. Toyota sans-Prius would have still pushed them above GM.

It would matter if GM needed that stock to raise capital, but they don't.
The stock is just extra cash.
The company is fine.

He seems to. He's a second-rate loon that occasionally wanders out of P&N.

It's at 7.01 right now...if it goes below 7, I think that will be lower than when the company first went public---which was some years before Dwight D. Eisenhower was president.

I've only got like 20 shares, so no big deal, but it's interesting to watch history unfold on my desktop ticker :)

um.. GM is going to declare bankrupcy!

they've used up their $1B line of credit, and CAN'T GET MORE CREDIT!!!!!!!

Unless they magically become profitable, they are going to default on a few bills. (ie: employee paychecks.)

i predict GM will file chap 11 b4 Thanksgiving.

I highly doubt that.

They have about $24B in cash. They're not going bankrupt anytime soon, but they're going to be a LOT leaner.

You were saying?

bailout:
"GM has said it needs $4 billion by the end of the month (dec 2008) to continue operations."

Honda and Toyota never switched to eco-friendly cars, that's what they've been making for a LONG time. They were designing for a world market and generally other countries have wanted lower cost higher mileage vehicles. The domestic auto makers were more focused on the American market which until recently didn't care at all about mileage.

I guess that's what happens when you make crappy cars.

Nothing to do with their build quality, it was their poor decisions in the early 2000's. It's actually a good lesson in greed and poor leadership.

Around 2000, Toyota and Honda were switching to eco friendly cars because they had foreseen high gas prices (they have The Force or something). GM decided to run the SUV train to death...until it was too late to stop the train from going off the cliff.

$3 gas hit, and GM execs acted like they were shocked that people didn't want 12MPG SUV's anymore. So, instead of costly retooling and redesigns, they decided to offer rebates. Huge, amazing rebates---to the point where they were losing money on each vehicle sold.

The rebates made new GM vehicles cheaper to finance than used vehicles. Therefore, used GM vehicle prices took a nosedive. When this happens, lease buyouts (GM's big cash cow) took a huge hit.

Which leads us to early last year, where GM is stuck with products nobody wants, and has to accept lease returns for used vehicles they can't give away. They tried to increase sales with...you guessed it...MORE rebates. It didn't work, and they finally realized they were going to have to make efficient smaller cars. They decided to do expensive redesigns and retooling at a time when they had negative cash flow, hence the layoffs we're seeing now.

Today, they're having to retool more plants and pay workers overtime because they can't get enough Cobalts and Aveos on the market to keep up with demand. They have a product people actually want, and they can't make enough of the damn things.

Someone's going to write a book on this some day with the title "How to Screw Up a 100 Year Old Business".

Half of the vehicles that Toyota makes are trucks/SUVs, I'd hardly call that being eco-minded.

no kidding, the eco prius just made the yuppy feel better about buying their land cruiser or tundra. the whole narrative thats been parroted over and over about domestics building the wrong vehicles is bogus, they built the vehicles they could make money on, which were trucks, and so did toyota. toyota didn't make a mint on prius's, far from it, they bled money for years. i guess thats what the domestic bashers really wanted gm to build, a money losing car they'd probably not buy anyways. anyways employee healthcare and retirement costs sunk them. americans with healthcare and retirement ...who gives a sh*t about that right? you can just buy a prius:p

they are thinking that those are the customers that still shop domestic. so they cater for them. the consumer has already decided not to buy american cars. america has voted, don't blame gm.
