Nvidia's low end cards are definitely less appealing than AMD's — it's my opinion that AMD really nailed it with Pitcairn and Cape Verde, and blew it with Tahiti. Conversely, Nvidia nailed it with GK104 and blew it with GK107... and likely GK106 as well.

I'm just glad that Nvidia's lineup is finally going to fill out. More price drops incoming!

Blew it? Are you serious? Are you really trying to be serious with that statement? Tahiti is an amazing chip, how can you possibly be serious. It is the fastest gaming chip on the market, very efficient, and it absolutely smokes kepler in compute. Developers are leveraging the power of compute in many of the AAA games recently released or soon to be, Dirt Showdon, Sleeping Dogs, MOH Warhammer, etc etc. Since AMD wants to brring the power of compute to the masses it only makes sense to get the hardware to market. Remember, iterations of this architecture will also be making it into Jaguar(Kabini, Tamash) and Kaveri fusion parts. It is also a vital part for pushingHSA, OpenCL, AMP. You underestimate the capabilities of this architecture.

Since when are those AAA titles? LOL. 'etc.etc.' can you show me what games these 'etc.' titles are? NVIDIA has all the AAA titles.

Oh man, nobody can name me any AAA titles AMD has. so much for this 'ETC.ETC.' business.

Markyd, I am sad to see that our previous conversation did not have any impact on your treatment of other posters. Please take the next 3 days off to reconsider your actions amidst what is so far on track to be a very short tenure here.

I don't know, and I don't care, because

1. I didn't bring the AAA titles argument up, I said what I did because all you do is troll and cry green tears.
2. I'm not 13 and "MAI COMPANEE IS KEWLER DEN URZ!!!1" doesn't sound like a fun argument.
3. See above.

so if you have nothing to say to my point then dont talk and claim im bias when you cant prove me wrong. people on this forum are lead to believe that 7950/7970>670/680 because AMD performs better in games like sniper elite who we have never heard of and frankly nobody ever plays. The REAL big games nvidia has, such as batman arkham city, skyrim, battlefield 3( and soon to be the new medal of honor) every single blizzard game that comes out and is out (which are the biggest, actual AAA titles), max payne 3 and the shogun series.

They're all AAA :). TWIMTBP'd is old news, rolling into the grave... :p

lmfao good answer, way to show me what titles are AAA.

even guild wars 2 is a nvidia title. You can get equal frames on a 670 compared to a 7970 according to tomshardware.

I say we just stick to 1920x1200/1080 for this type of card: that's the target resolution. Including results that combine resolutions like 1280x1024 and 2560x1600 isn't doing anyone any favors given who this card is targeted at.

Both stock, the GTX 660 Ti is 9% faster than the HD 7870, and that's that.

Agreed. Plus overclock vs overclock that margin shrinks even more. 9% is already dangerously close to splitting hairs, and less than 9% is even more hair-splitting. At that point you may want to consider other factors like price, power, heat, noise, NV-exclusives like CUDA/PhysX/A-Vsync, etc. and also the exact cooler varies from product to product even if the GPU is the same.

Btw, in that chart, is TPU using results from older drivers or is it using 12.7beta results? I suspect the former, based on how TPU has operated in the past.

According to the test setup page, they were using 12.7 Beta. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GTX_660_Ti_Amp_Edition/5.html

Ah thanks. Still, the stock vs stock difference is single-digit, and oc vs oc probably even closer.

As for NV yes it has better gamedev relations, but AMD actually has some games I've heard of in its Gaming Evolved program, like Shogun 2, BF3 (ironically), Syndicate, and Deus Ex: HR. http://blogs.amd.com/play/category/gamepartners/

I'm ignorant here.

What exactly is an AAA game?
Is there a gamer poll taken by somebody to determine this, or is it an arbitrary rating by someone?

so then is it okay when people here say AMD is faster when it comes to the 7970ghz vs the 680 but if its the 660ti > 7870 you are splitting hairs?

Your thoughts please..

7970GHz is a pre-overclocked card, and arguably the GTX680 Keplers are also pre-overclocked as well. But who cares about factory overclocks among enthusiasts? FWIW I think that with their respective factory ocs, they are basically tied at 1080p with the 7970 slowly pulling away as you ramp up resolution, but it's not by that much on average across all games, maybe 10% by the time you hit Eyefinity-level resolutions. (Obviously if you spend 100% of your time playing one game then you may want to forget averages and focus on how cards do on that one game, but most of us play a lot of different games.)

Max overclocks vary but it seems that the 7970 does edge out the 680 once both are max-oc'd, on average, even at 1080p and more and more as you go up in resolution. It's not a knockout victory and might not even be noticeable to many people's eyes, but it's pretty clear that the 7970 is a little faster.

Does the 7970 win by enough that I think you can just ignore other factors? No. The power/heat (and possibly noise, depending on cooler comparisons) from a max-oc'd 7970 is significantly worse than a max-oc'd 680, and the 680 also has tricks like 4-monitor support without adapters, a-Vsync, CUDA, and Physx. Possibly also better multi-monitor support. The 680 is also physically smaller so it will fit in more cases, and the lower power draw means less likelihood of having to upgrade your PSU as well. However, the 7970 sports an additional 1GB of VRAM (vs the baseline 680; yes I know they make 4GB versions of the GTX 680 but they are rarer and costlier), does better in compute, and is generally cheaper.

Why not the resolution they can both handle well without being bottlenecked much if at all?

Showing the stock 660Ti is 9-10% faster than the 7870 at a decent resolution.

Include everything and you get results from more CPU bottlenecked resolutions and a resolution that the cards would trip over themselves in.

And here's a graph where the 660ti exactly matches the 7870.

Indeed! Both sku's have strengths and weaknesses and there is some differentiation between the two. On winning? Personally allow the market place to decide.
