The only reason we are so dependent on American aid today is because of Zardari's policy of filling his stomach while everyone else starves to death. To highlight this: Zardari moved to his Karachi residence which he has turned into a fortress; closed all four sides of the roads leading to it. I am guessing I live on the same electricity zone as he does. Before he came, we used to have 3-4 hrs of loadshedding every day. Today? None at all. Of course, the rest of the city compensates by ever increasing hours without electricity. Fuck Zardari, fuck the PPP.
There are lots of reasons Pakistan is dependent on outside aid, and self-serving politicians is only one reason. (Though for the record I'm still impressed he delegated powers away from the presidency.)
I imagine that millions if not billions of dollars could be made available for better infrastructure, education and to bolster the salaries of government employees so they would in turn be less beholden to corruption. Problem is that money is tied up in maintaining an enormous army with an outdated mindset that a war with India may need to be fought any day now. Like with the U.S., the vast majority of Pakistan's fiscal problems are of its own creation.
